Book Review: Dazzling act of disciplined imagination

This series is shaping up into a worthy successor to the previous sets. Action-packed, exciting and at the same time weighty, it is serious fantasy at its best. I devoured the earlier series as a younger man and was tremendously excited to see a third series emerge. There is always the danger that an author will do a series ad nauseam and run out of creative ideas at the end, spoiling the memory, but Donaldson has spent a long time coming up with this and appears to have avoided the trap.
This middle volume begins and ends on amazing cliffhangers. I'll say nothing of the plot specifics except to add that the excitement in the middle rarely lets up either. Donaldson has a way of riveting you to the text in the action scenes which is unusual in a fantasy author - indeed, he is the only one that I have maintained the patience to continue reading into early middle age, except for Terry Pratchett. As usual with Donaldson, the momentum of the plot is mediated by the limitations and self-doubts of his key human protagonist. Avery wants to do the right thing, but is tortured by a personal agenda to save her adopted son, by doubts about the nature of the newly revenant Thomas Convenant, and by warnings that she has it in her to destroy the world.
There are new allies and old enemies out of the Land's distant past, and meeting these is an interesting fulfilment. The Land has changed and its people no longer practice the magical ways we met in the very first series, but the peoples and their characters are preserved. As much as ever, the Haruchai made me want to slap them with their Spartan absolutism and the dire extremities to which it always seems to lead them. This time they have seized the mastery of the entire land and forbidden the use of Earthpower as their answer to the risk of Desecration, and as a result the world is defenceless against the arisen Foul and his allies.
If I have one complaint, it is that the travails of the land never seem to end. However completely you thought the Despiser had been taught the error of his ways at the end of the last series, something even more dreadful and urgent needs fixing a few thousand years later. This can get a little depressing. It's rather like Afghanistan, where the glorious victories always seem to end up with the place worse off as soon as you turn your back for five minutes.
It pays to keep a dictionary to hand when reading Donaldson, as his vocabulary is truly prodigious and he is not afraid to use it. His style and mastery of language, however, are profound.
