Book Review: Very Good Book About Fasting

Jentezen Franklin defines fasting as abstaining from food for a spiritual purpose. He discusses the scriptures that deal with fasting, and he mentions the great men and women of the faith who fasted, such as David, Elijah, Anna, Daniel, Ezekiel, and of course, the Lord Jesus. He observes that fasting is considered just as much a part of the spiritual life as giving and praying (Matthew 6:5-18).
Franklin also discusses the Daniel fast that lasted 21 days, noting that Daniel fasted from meats and rich foods, and that he didn't fast from fruits and vegetables. He also points out that Daniel and his three friends did this fast in Daniel chapter one, rather than eating the king's non-kosher food.
Occasionally, Franklin reads the concept of fasting into texts like 2 Chronicles 7:14 and James 4:7-10. There are a few other places where his interpretation of scripture could be called into question (such as 1 Thessalonians 5:23, where he contends that this is God's order of importance of which parts of a human that should be cared for the most.
Franklin also records how lives have been changed for the better because someone fasted and prayed for deliverance from sin or financial trouble. But he avoids the error of saying that fasting guarantees financial blessing.
I admit that I read this book looking for theological errors, but instead I got challenged and I got blessed. One of the better books on fasting that you can buy.
