Book Reviews of Fancy Nancy

Book Review: Funny Little Girls
Summary: 5 Stars

I came across this book very recently and it made me laugh out loud! I didn't find it to be pretentious or "written by adults for adults" as one review stated.

This is a sweet little story about a fancy little girl and her family who love, support and appreciate one another.
I was pleased that there was a mother and a father in the story and a little baby sister as well.

The story teaches that it's o.k. to be who you want to be, and that as a family, we can be different from each other but still have fun together trying things out that other family members enjoy.

The illustrations are excellent--vibrant, cheerful, girlish and very detailed.

I shared this book with my sister and she and I had a good laugh over it as well, and even reminisced on being little girls ourselves.

I definitely recommend it, whether you are a "Fancy Nancy" yourself or whether you know a "Fancy Nancy"...either way it's a fun read and makes for a nice gift.

Book Review: Love to Be Fancy
Summary: 5 Stars

What a wonderful book! Well, I admit, mostly I like looking at the pictures. But even for someone who's completely grown out of pink and purple, I often read this book wishing I could have the self-confidence to dress just like Nancy. I've read things about this book saying that there is no deep message, but I think there are several. I love that Nancy's parents make room for her to be herself even though they don't act like she does. And I love that Nancy has the desire even at such a young age to see beauty and elegance in everything around her. Her parents don't let her do everything she wants (think of the time she goes to her grandparents' anniversary party) but they let her do enough to let her personality shine through. And as for being too dramatic - I believe that the only people who believe that over-the-top clothing and attitudes are wrong are the people who need to take a deep breath and figure out why they spend that much time thinking about stuff like that.
Keep being Fancy, Nancy!!

Book Review: The daycare kids go crazy for this!
Summary: 5 Stars

The kids at the daycare where I work get this glazed expression now whenever they see this book - they chant FANCY NANCY over and over. The fancy girls who all love pink and purple and glitter, of course, took to this right away. All of the boys have hovered nearby to overhear what happens, and now they just clamor on in with all the girls to reread the story again and again. It's a great story with a great heart. The expressive and detailed illustrations remind me of Hillary Knight, which is a good thing.
Even better are the lessons: learning acceptance for people who are different... in this case, ironically, a precocious child learning to accept and appreciate her normal family for who they are. But what I really loved about this book was the way Fancy Nancy's family provide selfless validation for her in the way they embrace her interests - an excellent model for all of us.

Book Review: A Breath of Fancy Fresh Air!
Summary: 5 Stars

Fancy Nancy loves fancy clothes and knows fancy words. When she decides to teach her family how to be fancy, the results are comical. How will her family help when she falls on her face on her big night?

Encouragers in a strong family really can help each member to be creative and happy! And, isn't it nice to see a successful, family with a mother and father back in literature again?

What a terrific story to help introduce vocabulary development! Readers will be motivated to learn fancy French words and replace "plain" words with "fancy" words. Research says there is a strong link between vocabulary and success! Nancy is on her way!

The brilliant illustrations by Robin Preiss Glasser in Fancy Nancy bring the text and story to life and extend discussion possibilities.

Book Review: Little Girls Will Love Fancy Nancy
Summary: 5 Stars

My daughter received her first Fancy Nancy book on her second birthday and immediately fell in love with it. She has since gotten others in the series, which are just as enjoyable. The story is very cute and it has taught my daughter, as at very early age, that there are many (and sometimes fancier) ways of saying the same thing. Instead of saying ice cream, my two year will ask for a "parfait." Sometimes, she will even say "Merci" instead of "thank you." She has not asked for a pen with a "plume" yet, but I am sure it's only a matter of time. We read this book every night! The drawings have amazing detail (adults can appreciate a lot of the subtle humor in them) and the expressions on the faces of the characters are terrific. I can't imagine any little girl not loving Fancy Nancy!
