Book Review: not your average sci fi novel

I admit that science fiction doesn't normally make up a large part of my reading list other than the odd Star Wars or Star Trek binge, I haven't really read much sci fi at all. A friend of mine (who at one point turned me onto Ken Follett, my favorite author, so I hold his recommendations in high regard) mentioned reading this and said it was fantastic with amazing amounts of detail..so I checked it out..and I'm glad I did because it opened up a whole new world of reading and a brand new author (to me anyway) to explore...
Lawrence Newton...born hundreds of years from now had a life that most people would envy at any time...born into a rich and powerful family, slated to take over the family business, the world would be his oyster if he would just do what is expected of him by his father...that the world just so happens to be a colonized planet millions of miles away from Earth is the problem...Lawrence isn't interested in the family business..he's interested in exploring the stars....be careful what you wish for Lawrence...
as it turns out, Lawrence ends up working for Zantiu-Braun, a mass corporation based on earth that has more or less financially backed most of human kind's planetary colonizations..thing is, they don't do it out of the goodness of their hearts...Lawrence ends up being in the enforcement branch of their 'asset realization' program..this is a big part of the book and what I found to be most interesting...Asset realization is in essence the spoils of war..without the war....Zantiu-Braun forces go to planets they helped populate only to take anything of value they see fit in order to settle up the planet's debts with the home corporation on earth...In this future that Hamilton vividly portrays, there was never an economical method of space travel found..needless to say most of the new populations aren't happy to see the Zantiu-Braun representitives but most never put up much of a fight...until they land on the planet Thallspring for the second time..
Just a fantastic book with rich characters and great story to tell..Hamilton writes in such a way that you'll find yourself pulling for the colonizers AND the 'brute invaders' from earth at different times...nobody is out and out evil and even the 'good guys' walk a gray line in their methods to see justice done and free themselves from tyranny...
For a book that revolves around so much technology and future tech jargon, at its heart it's amazingly human
Summary of Fallen Dragon
In the distant future, corporations have become sustainable communities with their own militaries, and corporate goals have essentially replaced political ideology. On a youthful, rebellious impulse, Lawrence joined the military of a corporation that he now recognizes to be ruthless and exploitative. His only hope for escape is to earn enough money to buy his place in a better corporation. When his platoon is sent to a distant colony to quell a local resistance effort, it seems like a stroke of amazing fortune, and Lawrence plans to rob the colony of their fabled gemstone, the Fallen Dragon, to get the money he needs. However, he soon discovers that the Fallen Dragon is not a gemstone at all, but an alien life form that the local colonists have been protecting since it crashed in their area. Now, Lawrence has to decide if he will steal the alien to exploit the use of its inherent biotechnical processes -- which far exceed anything humans are capable of -- or if he will help the Resistance get the alien home.Literature & Fiction Books
