Book Reviews of Faith of My Fathers : A Family MemoirBook Review: The (Nearly) Perfect Story about 3 Imperfect Men Summary: 4 Stars
John McCain, the 2008 Republican presidential candidate is able to write a beautiful and reflective tome embodied in the novel Faith Of My Fathers. Reflecting on the importance of patriotism, comradeship, and, to borrow a phrase from the book, personal honor, McCain chronicles both the experiences of his grandfather and his father within the book.
Painting himself as a belligerent yet understanding of the greatness and importance of the U.S. military in it's service to the people, John McCain tries immensely to play up his maverick image that he cultivated throughout the 2008 presidential campaign in this novel. He heavily emphasizes the importance of his fellow comrades in both surviving through the Naval Academy and for getting through his imprisonment in Hanoi. One scene in the novel that really portrays the brotherhood between the soldiers that was personally very touching to me was when, near the end of McCain's sentence the prisoners attempt to hold a church service. When the guards try to break it up, a resistance begins to brew, and McCain and his fellow POW's are able to win over the guards and continue to hold church services.
My one qualm with this book is merely a point of contention with McCain's beliefs on America during the Vietnam War. Though I believe that McCain is definitely qualified and is one of the few veterans, due to his experience and adherence to the code of conduct throughout, to have a sort of war hawk opinion on the war in Vietnam, I disagree with his ideas later in the book regarding American Exceptionalism and the idea that America as initially justified into entering the war in Vietnam.
Overall, the novel was a good read, and clocking in at about 350 pages, could be finished in a vigorous afternoon of reading. Brimming over with patriotism, pride, and honor, I give this novel 4.5 stars.
Book Review: Megan is a DING-BAT!! Summary: 1 Stars
Megan is a DING-BAT and this book reflects that. I read the book during a six hour plane ride. It left me wishing that I had spent the time just looking out of the window. I prob would have seen Megan somewhere up in the clouds.
