Book Reviews of Fairyopolis: A Flower Fairies Journal

Book Review: This is becoming a common format...
Summary: 5 Stars

I think this format with all of the extras, pull-outs, gizmos, and what's-its is here now for good in children's books. The first one my daughter really got into was the Dragonology book. It didn't even read the storyline when I picked this one out, but I figured that she would like it well enough because of all of the do-dads and gee-gaws inside. As it turned out, the storyline is the same as a DVD we had picked up recently that she watches over and over again, so the book was a major hit with her.

I completely agree that the cursive handwritten is difficult to decipher, but that was something my daughter actually liked about the book. She's been teaching herself calligraphy, so she liked the handwritten text. This is not a storybook to be quickly skimmed through. The author/artists clearly intended for this to be a book that girls would spend time coming back to.

Book Review: Fairy Fun In A Gorgeous Package
Summary: 5 Stars

My mom sent me this book as a gift. I had never even heard of it! But I am very familiar with Cicely Mary Barker's Flower Fairies, which appear throughout the book. The story is an interesting account of CMB's stay in Bartons, Sussex in 1920. She slowly becomes aware of fairies living on the grounds while she is house-sitting. The book is beautiful, with silver ink and a gem on the cover, and many lift-up and pull-out notes, maps, booklets, etc. with information on fairies. It is fun to read, especially with a child old enough not to tear it, and has enough to it to keep adults entertained. The cursive writing is a little difficult to read. It really does have the feel of a scrap-book and I've read it over many times.

Book Review: Mesmerizing
Summary: 5 Stars

We saw this in a bookstore and my 4 year old daughter, Mabel, was absolutely enchanted! She curled up in a chair and was gasping with each turn of the page. She couldn't put it down and looked at it for half an hour straight at the store! A little bird told the Easter Bunny how much she liked it so she'll be getting a welcome surprise come Easter morning :o) She really enjoyed taking things out of the envelopes and didn't miss any of the details like the fairy dust or the bits of fairy wings. This book is for a child who likes quiet and delicate activities. We have 4 daughters and this wouldn't be a gift that I would get for just any of them, but it is perfect for a child like Mabel who is more shy and reserved.

Book Review: NOT JUST FOR KIDS!
Summary: 5 Stars

If you want to be transported to a magical place for an hour or so, buy this book! I saw it and bought it just in case I ever have a granddaughter. I wasn't expecting it to be a hit with the adult women I know. But after feeling like I'd been transported back to being a little girl and swept into Fairyland (and I didn't believe in fairies!), I passed it around to my friends. It was just about impossible to get the book back! Everybody asked if they could share it with just one or two more friends. And this is before the book was ever shared with a child! Eventually I ordered 6 more copies from Amazon. The book is so creative and beautifully done. Just thinking about it continues to give me pleasure.

Book Review: Go Back To the Magic of Childhood
Summary: 5 Stars

This will appeal to all who enjoy the artwork of Cicely Mary Barker and her beautifully rendered drawings of familiar flowers and their fairy counterparts. This is like looking at a lovingly put together scrapbook with mementoes of days gone by and includes photographs, ticket stubs, shopping lists and old letters. Although it is listed for ages 6+, it is best appreciated by grownups who will handle all the add-ons with care. I love the mention of Edith and I am thinking this is a reference to Edith Holden, naturalist, artist and author of "The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady". This lovely book is a sweet reminder of a more gentle time. I bought copies to give to friends with the capacity to enjoy it!
