Book Reviews of Fairy Haven and the Quest for the WandBook Review: Good movie treatment, poor writing Summary: 4 Stars
I was disappointed in both books of this series. They read (to me) like a movie treatment, with plot and characters sketched in, but no real fantasy world created. There are lots of challenging vocabulary words, but the author fails to demonstrate what a rich vocabulary can do: paint a complex and compelling word picture. I know Gail Carson Levine can write better than this! I read this book aloud to my daughter, and it is NOT a good read aloud book because the author frequently has the speakers complete each others' sentences and doesn't denote who is speaking. Also, make sure you are familiar with the plot of the first book (Quest for the Egg), or the first few chapters of this one will make no sense at all. My daughter and I both enjoyed the story - we just wish it was told better.
I gave an extra star because the illustrations are beyond beautiful.
Book Review: My daughter loved having another Fairy Haven to read Summary: 4 Stars
My 5 year old loved the fact that when Fairy Haven and the Quest for the Egg was finished that we could continue reading about the charactors that she had come to like so much. The "Quest for the Wand" had a more complicated plot, but we still found the charactors magical. I was always surprised when I would ask my daughter to recap what we had read the night before and she would nail every main point. She also insisted that we not cheat and look ahead at the beautiful illustrations, she loved the anticipation. If you liked the first Fairy Dust, this will surly continue to delight you.
Book Review: Well... Summary: 4 Stars
The item never arrived, but the seller responded quickly to my email, assumed it was lost in the mail, and at no additional cost to me sent another one.
Book Review: Simply awful Summary: 1 Stars
This is perhaps the worst "children's" book I have ever come across. The story is meandering and hard to follow, and the dialogue style - awkward and awful. I don't want to be reading to my 5 yr old about mean mermaids, "good" characters that readily break promises and fairies drowning in floods. That's as far as we got - I refused to read more. Now I know why the book was in the bargain bin at a close-out discounter. I wouldn't even donate it and subject some other child to this dreck. This will be the first book I've ever thrown away.
