Book Reviews of Faerie Tale: A Novel of Terror and Fantasy

Book Review: Strange ties to the ancient past
Summary: 4 Stars

Phil Hastings is a successful movie scriptwriter. His wife, Gloria, was once a stage actress of some success. Gabbie, a daughter from Phil's first marriage, is a university student. Sean and Patrick are eight-year old, identical twins. The whole family have just moved from California to an old farmhouse in New York State. The house seems quaint and quiet, though only a short car drive away from a city with a university and an airport. This seems like the ideal place for Phil to restart his original career of writing novels. The house exudes history and its heritage becomes even more intriguing as the Hastings learn more about it from new found friends Mark and Garry. The farm is referred to by the locals as "the old Kessler place", after the previous owners, but originally it was called "Erl King Hill" which means "Hill of the Elf King". Sean and Patrick are the first to feel that there is something strange about the place when they come upon a creepy stone bridge which seems to exude evil. This is only the very beginning of a series of increasingly weird and frightening events in which the Hastings family encounter the supernatural world of the Faeries.

Tiny Pixies, dwarf sized Leprechauns and full grown Faeries: they are all here. This novel sticks pretty close to the folklore material which speaks of a mystical world that partially overlaps our own. This is not a novel like Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings (50th Anniversary Edition) or Brooks' The Sword of Shannara which take place completely in another world. Quite the reverse most of this book describes 'real life'. Feist, however, plays on those moments when we feel that the uncanny, the unknown, the strange are close at hand and about to reach out and grab us. Feist writes well and manages to make the reader interested in his characters. We become involved in both the 'normal' and 'abnormal' events described. We slip easily between the two worlds and we want to know how things will resolve.

Unfortunately I have one criticism. Towards the climax of the book Feist has included two 'explanation' chapters in which Gary and Mark give long and winding explanations about the history of the secret society of the "Magi". By this time we have already worked out some of this information, and we do not need to know much of the rest. These chapters slow down the action to the pace of a dull lecture, and could have been much abbreviate, if not cut out.

Finally I have noticed an interesting parallel with Robert Macleish's Prince Ombra: the child hero's of both novels discover that baseball skills can be useful in overcoming evil. Macleith's novel is the earlier, but I do not think this is a case of copying. Rather this seems to indicate how ubiquitous baseball is to an American boy's life.

This is not an excellent book, but is certainly well worth reading.
