Book Review: Things Heat Up

In the third volume of Jeff Smith's fantastic Bone saga, the humor that dominated The Great Cow Race takes a backseat to drama. After some eerie dreams, Fone Bone and Thorn learns shocking truths about the past while Phoney and Smiley begin a new scam with potentially devastating consequences. The book careens into an intense action sequence and ends with a true cliffhanger. Though Bone is still funny, it is no longer light-hearted. Eyes of the Storm begins the setup for more brutal things to come.
This color edition retains an extra two pages that Smith inserted into the One Volume Edition. This charming addition becomes increasingly poignant as the Bone saga develops, for it is the last moment Bone and Thorn will have to simply be together without having their lives threatened. This edition also restores the beautiful artwork between chapters that was missing in the One Volume Edition.
Steve Hamaker's coloring for the new editions hits its stride in Eyes of the Storm. The color makes the book's various moods even more powerful and brings out details in Smith's line work that were easy to miss in the black-and-white version.

In "Eyes of the Storm," book three in the epic BONE series, Gran'ma Ben reveals long-kept secrets about Thorn's royal heritage and the ancient enmities that may lead to war.
In "Eyes of the Storm," volume three of the nine-book BONE saga, Lucius, Smiley, and Phoney survive an attack by the rat creatures and return safely to Lucius' tavern in Barrelhaven. Phoney, desperate to win a bet with Lucius, stokes the townspeople's fear of dragons and boasts that he is a professional dragonslayer.
Back at the farm, Fone Bone and Thorn are troubled by strange dreams, and Gran'ma Ben's reaction to them is stranger still: She reveals long-kept secrets and warns of great danger. Thorn, Fone Bone, and Gran'ma Ben may have to leave the farm forever.

The dream sequences in this volume are inspired pieces of comics storytelling, especially the six-page "Moby Bone" sequence: the pacing, illustration, symbolism, and panel layout are close to perfect. A special addition to this collection is a set of more than 40 pages that have been retouched from the already near-perfect original comics. There are also 5 never-before-seen story pages and 9 new illustrations.
