Book Review: A Heart-Pounding Homage

Earlier this month, I led my family on a trip through Israel. It seemed only fitting to read "Exodus" as a companion guide, but I expected it to be more entertainment than enlightenment. I was wrong.
This popular novel by Leon Uris serves as a poignant reminder of the toils and tribulations leading up to Israel's modern statehood. From the birth of Zionism, to British betrayals, to the Holocaust and the millions left floundering afterward, the last century of Jewish history was a decisive one, threatening to wipe out the race for good. Instead, as Uris depicts in this sprawling, sometimes messy, sometimes moving, tale, the Jews survived by finding unity in the midst of chaos and conflict.
The story follows an American nurse with her own selfish motives, a handsome Israeli freedom fighter, a boy sharpened by the horrors in the Warsaw ghettos, and a young Danish woman looking for identity and a place to belong. These four lives and loves weave in and out, forming a tapestry of suspense, emotion, and history. Although Uris writes in a style that feels somewhat dated at times, switching without notice from one point of view to another, he captures the drama and heart-pounding events that surrounded the birth of Ersetz Israel--the state of Israel.
Whether or not you visit Israel, this is an important book for its depiction of vital moments in the twentieth century. It pulls no punches, showing loyalty and treason on all sides. It pays homage to the Jewish spirit, and to the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, while never forgetting to keep the pace racing along.
