Book Review: Extremely useful but not a complete course of study

We have been using the "Everything for Early Learning" series of books for our children since we began homeschooling. The Preschool through Second Grade books have proven to be extremely useful for teaching those early academic skills. Preschool works on colors, shapes, concepts such as before and after, in and out, and letter structures. Kindergarten teaches consonant sounds, short vowel sounds, beginning phonics and reading as well as counting, ordinal numbers, and simple addition and subtraction. First grade teaches complete vowel sounds, consonant blends (such as TH and SH, etc) and phonics rules for reading success. The math concepts don't progress beyond very basic addition and subtraction at these levels.
The reason I give it 3 stars instead of 5 is that while the series opens the door to these skills, it does not offer nearly enough repetition with each new skill or concept to be considered a stand-alone course of study for each grade. For instance in the Kindergarten language arts when a new short vowel sound is introduced there are only 3 pages of exercises before a new sound is introduced. This is a constant throughout all the books. If you have a bright child that picks up new concepts very easily you might be able to get away with using these books alone for the very basic early years of teaching at home: Preschool, Kindergarten, First Grade. I would not recommend depending on the Everything series alone for a child who needs repetition and practice in order to grasp a concept. Also, they only cover language arts and math so any other subjects would still need to be provided through other materials.
Having said that, I've taught three children to read with these books. There are times when I've found it necessary to use extra materials to help drive home some new ideas that aren't covered sufficiently, but I've homeschooled 2 boys (who are now in 3rd and 4th grade and reading very well) and am currently using the First Grade book with my 5 year old daughter who is learning to read. I'm also using them with my 4 year old grandson and 3 year old granddaughter at the Kindergarten and Preschool levels.
These books are playfully designed with friendly monsters used to communicate each lesson. Children who go to public or private school who could benefit from extra work with their parents at home should find them fun enough to remain engaging. The lessons are not long, so as to help keep the child's attention. As a homeschooling mother who is also a former private school teacher I don't recommend depending on these books exclusively for your curriculum, but like I said: I've taught two boys to read with them and am teaching my daughter as well - and now I'm using them with my grandkids.
