Book Reviews of Everything I'm Cracked Up to Be: A Rock & Roll Fairy Tale

Book Review: Talk About a Page Turner!
Summary: 5 Stars

I think everybody out there has that little fantasy of being a rock star and how glamorous living out that dream would be. If you really want your fantasy to come to life read Jen Trynin's Everything I'm Cracked Up to Be and slowly watch everything you thought it'd be like vanish into reality.
It was the mid 1990's, when Alanis Morissette, Liz Phair, and the Lilith Fair Tour were all embracing a woman's power to rock and say whatever they wanted. Jen Trynin was supposed to be the next big thing. Major labels were fighting over her and many articles were praising her as the girl to watch. But instead she ended up becoming part of the Things that Didn't Happen in '95. As she calls herself a "has been-who- never- was." Trynin takes the reader on a journey of self discovery and exposes the harsh realities of the music industry. She turns her failure into acceptance. She's able to say she survived.
What Trynin's memoir does best, besides being beautifully written, is it captures honestly the demise of her own music career. She does it through sarcasm and humor that will keep you reading page after page. She also does it without bitterness or self-loathing, but with a more grown up self reflecting on her downfall. It could have been her regretting mixed with whining and focusing on where it all went wrong, but instead where Trynin succeeds is that she is able to look back on it all and laugh. She's able to honestly portray herself as the cocky big shot she thought she was whose ego may just have cost her chance at fame. All writers struggle with accurately exposing themselves for the flawed beings they are, and Trynin isn't afraid to do this. The book is also written in a conversational tone, which makes reading it seem effortless. Trynin builds up great anticipation to which record label she's going to pick and where her love triangle between her bandmate and boyfriend is going to end up. As you read you're waiting for everything that's so wonderfully crafted to fall apart.
Her account also illustrates that sometimes getting what you've always wanted isn't exactly how you pictured it. Some dreams are meant to die. It's about losing yourself to what you think your dreams are supposed to be and crawling back from it all. Wake up to the reality and read Trynin's book, especially if you want to go into the music industry it might prepare you for more than you'd think.

Summary of Everything I'm Cracked Up to Be: A Rock & Roll Fairy Tale

It was 1994: post–Liz Phair, mid–Courtney Love, just shy of Alanis Morissette. After seven years of slogging it out in the Boston music scene, Jen Trynin took a hard look at herself and gave “making it? one last shot.

It worked. Suddenly Trynin became the spark that set off one of the most heated bidding wars of the year. Major labels vied for her, to the tune of millions of dollars in deals. Lawyers, managers, and booking agents clamored for her attention. Billboard put her on the cover. Everyone knew she was the Next Big Thing. But then she wasn?t.

In a series of dizzying, hilarious, heartbreaking snapshots, Trynin captures what it?s like to be catapulted to the edge of rock stardom, only to plummet back down to earth. Everything I?m Cracked Up to Be is the story of a girl who got what she wished for—and lived happily ever after anyway.
