Book Reviews of Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven, But Nobody Wants to Die

Book Review: From Death to Life and Back Again...and Back Again
Summary: 5 Stars

The book has several elements intermingled together to create a cohesive work of genius. Crowder discusses the history of man's search for the soul; a novella of sorts addresses the burden we carry around for lost loved ones; "IM Conversations" between Crowder and Hogan depict the grieving process; and Hogan parallels all of this by discussing the history (and unfortunate demise) of bluegrass music. You'll be surprised how the bluegrass parts of this book relate with the other parts.

The pages of this book are filled with the quirky commentary Crowder readers have come to expect. And it manages to deal with the soul, the afterlife, and the grieving process in a sometimes heart-wrenching, sometimes laugh-out-loud-in-the-middle-of-Starbucks-when-you're-by-yourself tone.

I approached this book with a multitude of questions regarding the end of life, and I can now officially report that this book did not furnish the answers for which I was looking. What it did provide, however, was an understanding that people throughout history have attempted so diligently, yet with such futility to find these answers. And if the greatest thinkers and discoverers in history couldn't figure it out, then perhaps our simple minds are just unable to comprehend ideas as complex and transcendent as death and the afterlife.

This book will not give you answers to all of your deep ponderings. But it will offer some hope in the darkness and shed new light on a topic that is overlooked by the Church and misunderstood by most.

It is an exceptionally delightful, deeply captivating, painfully honest, profoundly insightful, exasperatingly confusing (in a good way), and staggeringly creative look at death, grief, the soul, and bluegrass music through the eyes of two artists with the combined super powers of personal experience, intellectual prowess, artistic genius, and a knack for using the online research tool Wikipedia.

Summary of Everybody Wants to Go to Heaven, But Nobody Wants to Die

'Everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die. And heaven, if we're to believe what was proposed by a man two thousand years ago, is a kingdom coming and a kingdom here and now; something for the present, not reserved entirely for the ever after. Right now we exist somewhere between here and there, and bluegrass carries the high lonesome song of our condition in its soul. None of us are getting out of here alive, but we will conclude that death is not the ultimate calamity.' --David Crowder and Mike Hogan When grief shatters our world and the pain of death and loss consumes us, we not only yearn for comfort, we want answers. Musicians David Crowder and Mike Hogan help us find those answers---and give us a song of hope in the meantime. In this unique book filled with warm, thought-provoking, and often hilarious insights, Crowder and Hogan reveal how bluegrass music can reach our souls like nothing else. Bluegrass was born from pain but has hope at its core; it gives us a song that assures us that death does not win, it is the beginning.
