Book Reviews of Every Sigh, the End: A Novel About ZombiesBook Review: Surreal, new-wave, unique, and intelligent zombie horror Summary: 5 Stars
'Every Sigh, The End' is a different type of zombie tale that shouldn't be missed, a breath of fresh air in an overused genre.
Twenty-six year old Ross is cynical, unhappy, paranoid, and often wishes other people were dead. He still attends high school and college parties he's much to old to mingle in with. He hangs around with a group of friends who each try desperately to be hip in their own way. His business is copying hardcore death-and-horror DVD's for sale for a living with his friend Preston. He doesn't get along with his parents or his sister Cordelia, all of whom have been acting very strange lately. Ross's girlfriend Lydia is sleeping around on him, while he's sleeping around with Lydia's best friend Stacy. While unlikable, Ross is a fascinating study of tedious living. Except for one thing; Ross is being followed by strangers watching and recording his every movement. He often suffers from bouts of Déjà vu, feeling that what is happening to him has already happened before.
Then on New Year's Eve, 1999, Ross's world is shattered. He arrives early for Preston's New Year's Eve party and catches Preston and Lydia together. After beating up Preston and Lydia (see, he's not very nice), he flees the scene only to be stopped at the end of the street by a strange film crew and a pack of wild zombies. Unable to go any further, his car destroyed by the maniacs, he bolts back to Preston's. As the zombies encroach upon the house, camera crews rolling, no one is safe. Only a few make it to the safety of the second floor, removing the staircase to give them enough time to adjust to what's happening and try to find a way out through the sea of hungry zombies encircling the house. Everything spins out of control and Ross's life will never be the same again.
Hornsby's book is brilliant. Who else could combine the horror of zombies with the banality of Reality TV. New Year's Eve 1999 is just the tip of the iceberg, and no one is sure who is control, or which will be chosen to survive. What follows is a detailed account of Ross's life between 1999 and 2005, through a jumbled timeline that switches back and forth often without warning, and without the clarity of whether it is happening now or has already happened. Some may find this style difficult to read but I thought that it added to the suspense of the storyline. Another kitchy addition is that every time the word "end" appears in the book, it's printed in boldface type.
The writing is excellent, the plot and style are unique and entertaining (though sometimes perplexing). This is an intelligent zombie novel with a great deal of thought behind it, even if there is a lot of brand-name dropping (bands, songs, clothing, restaurants, etc). Feel like you're being watched? Slow down and do a double take, you might just be being screened for the reality show of a lifetime. Highly recommended. Enjoy!
Summary of Every Sigh, the End: A Novel About ZombiesIt's New Year's Eve of 1999, and while Millennium celebrations are planned and the clock ticks downward amid rising fears and misgivings, professional nobody Ross Orringer is coming to grips with the fact that, at some point, his life has become stagnant. He is twenty-six years old and attends the same meaningless college parties, peddles the same sleazy horror movies with his best friend Preston, lives in the shadow of his younger sister's constant achievements, and continues to date the same two-timing girlfriend while engaging in an affair of his own with one of her closest friends. And to make matters worse, Ross is being photographed and monitored everywhere he goes, and receives chilling glances from every stranger he encounters. The paranoia mounts when Ross's closest friends and family begin acting more and more suspiciously as the New Year-and Preston's New Year's party-approaches. In the last minutes before the clock strikes twelve, Ross realizes that the new millennium may be more ominous than anyone could have imagined, because the streets have been closed, the crews have set up their cameras and equipment, the gray makeup has been applied, and decisions have been made. In the next millennium, time will lose all meaning, reality television will take an all too terrifying turn, and the living dead will roam the streets in search of Ross and everyone that is important to him.
