Book Reviews of Evening (Vintage Contemporaries)

Book Review: The Evening-Difficult to follow
Summary: 2 Stars

I found the book to be very hard to follow. The disjointedness was just too hard to follow with all of the characters and husbands. I am one to always finish a book that I start but this one just about did me in. Would not recommend it.

Book Review: Hard to Get Through
Summary: 1 Stars

I have heard that this book was not an easy read. Depite the sentence structure (or lack there of), I pressed on and found the true problem was not in the wording but rather, in the story.

Personally, I found it hard to connect with the pain associated with the ulimate loss of a two day long infatuation that occurred 40 years ago. Yes, intense feelings can linger but mature love often puts these rather childish notions into perspective. Since that was not the case in Evening, I found the protagonist's emotions unwarranted and difficult to care about. It is hard to have empathy for something so ridiculous.

The book crawled...and when it finally reached its point, it left no surprises.

I had been eagerly anticipating the upcoming movie, but I think I will pass on it after subjecting myself to this novel. I think I would have been more entertained had I simply chosen to watch paint dry or the water for my pasta come to a bowl on the stove.

Book Review: A True Waste of Time
Summary: 1 Stars

If it were possible to give this book a negative rating, I wouldn't hesitate to do so. What might have been a poignant, touching story, instead morphs into a rambling, unrealistic series of thoughts/feelings without any substance to speak of. I was determined to read this book, as the reviews I had read were somewhat glowing. What I found were characters without character and a plot that had gone MIA. The idea behind this book had great potential, but I found myself not caring in the least what happened to any of these superficial, immature characters. If you feel compelled to read this one, at least get it from the library. Even at amazon prices, it is extremely over-priced for what it is.

Book Review: One of very few books in my life I've been unable to finish
Summary: 1 Stars

After a month long hiatus I made my second attempt at trying to read this deplorably pretentious book. The author has some grand illusion of being the next e e cummings, by doing away with capitalization - or any punctuation - for these extensive blasaise narratives about nothing . . .i have two feet lets buy some cheese theres geese in the square does my butt look big in this outfit wont see you again hate this book who cares not i

Book Review: Disappointing
Summary: 1 Stars

The story was disappointing (same old literary formula - girl meets boy, girl falls in love with boy, girl loses boy - just a couple deaths thrown in for drama.) There was no depth to any of the characters and Ann, the main character, was tedious and shallow in her perceptions of life and love. Although this book was a chore to read, I'll still give the author another try.
