Book Review: This book is the cure for what's wrong with REIKI!

I initially wrote my review of Essential Reiki in December of 2000. Today is June 6, 2007 and the world is a very different place now than it was back then. September 11th happened, George Bush happened, Iraq happened. There is more suffering in this world now than there was in 2000 and if more people were doing this kind of healing instead of complaining about how Reiki is taught... Well, it could only help.
When it comes to this book, and in fact to Reiki in general, there are essentially two schools of thought. 1) Reiki is a traditional discipline and should be strictly preserved as such. Or 2) Reiki is a living, breathing thing that must evolve with us (its creators and progenitors) to survive. Diane Stein is definitely of the 2nd ilk. Yes, she is Wiccan, she's a staunch feminist, she has strong opinions about men, and some of her conclusions might be factually inaccurate. People have villified her, said she was just a glorified waitress with no qualifications, you name it.
The simple fact of the matter is that if she weren't on to something with her revealing Reiki in this book, if there weren't a lot of substance to what she taught,there wouldn't be so much energy, positive and negative, around this book. She hit a nerve because it's where the truth lives. Would we even care so much about Bill and Monica if we didn't believe there was at least SOME truth to it? This book has lots of truth and some opinion. Much like life. :-)
Reiki has definitely grown and evolved since Ms. Stein originally wrote Essential Reiki. Nowadays you can learn Reiki for free on the internet, and there are some distance attunements out there that will knock your socks off! The website that Ms. Stein's book inspired me to author, reikirevolution dot org is just one example of the many other excellent sources of material online drawing inspiration from her fine example. This book is an EXCELLENT overview of the myriad of possibilities that is Reiki.
I was trained and attuned to the Master-Teacher level of traditional Usui Shiki Ryoho Reiki by a "properly" trained and certified Master-Teacher in July of 1997. My lineage is verifiably traceable all the way back to Dr. Usui himself, by way of Takata. The Reiki that I practice today is hardly recognizable as the style I was trained in by my traditional Master-Teacher. This book is part of the reason why. As is taught in virtually all Reiki training, "Reiki is the best teacher" and it has continued to guide and teach and grow with me, and I think that's as it should be.
Is the Reiki you learn nowadays traditional, like it was taught in Japan? No. Is this style of Reiki congruent with Takata's ideas? No. Does any of this mean that this perspective of Reiki is less effective than the traditionalists? No, of course not. The most humorous claim that many critics of the "no secrets" approach make is that it is somehow bad to reveal the "sacred symbols" and that they won't work for the unattuned anyway. Did you hear the one about why did the chicken cross the road? If they won't work, then what does it matter who sees them? The symbols represent links to infinite energy, but they are not the energy themselves. One specious argument claims that to show them to the uninitiated will somehow weaken them. An infinite, inexhaustible flow of living energy, but if the wrong person sees it it will dry up and be harmed forever??? Get a life! This is not the spirit of Reiki, and it's simply false. Essential Reiki teaches from that Spirit of sharing and growth.
One reviewer claimed that it is not possible to attune 50 people or more at once as Diane Stein claims in her book, and that distance attunements are impossible. Don't tell that to the over 500,000 people I've attuned distantly via the Reiki Revolution dot org website! Some of them were attuned back in 2000 and they have gone on to be remarkable Master-Teachers in their own right!
By the by, who attuned Dr. Usui to the symbols anyway? Wasn't his a "non-traditional attunement?" Before you even try to invest any credence in any one who tells you that distance attunements don't work, or that the energy fades in 24 hours, just try it for yourself. You should have some experience of Reiki before you listen to someone with an agenda like many of the reviewers here (myself included -- my agenda is to remove nonsense and get to what WORKS). This book works.
Sadly, even after all this time, there are still traditionalists and Masters out there who want to propagate the lie that Reiki must be paid for to be of benefit, that the symbols must be hidden, to show them to the uninitiated is to weaken them, there are WMD in Iraq, and the Government is here to help you. In my experience, a Reiki Master who is more interested in money, secrecy, and "true Reiki" is neither a Master nor practicing Reiki. If you find a teacher who subscribes to any of these things, RUN! The same is true of reviewers. Except they have guns and they want to brainwash your children and put them in stews and make soldiers out of them. Or so I heard... ;-)
When you open the doors of possibility as they concern Reiki, as Diane Stein has done with Essential Reiki, you may discover what millions of others have: Everything that is not already dead continues to grow and evolve. Perhaps that is the meaning of life, anyway.
Get Essential Reiki, read it, digest it, consider from a standpoint of possibilities instead of limitations. Then make up your own mind about how you will use this infinite, powerful healing modality to benefit yourself and others. But don't stop with this one, go online and read many of the free sources of Reiki Information out there. You'll realize there is an entire universe of diversity more than flexible enough to fit within whatever your present level of understanding is.
Then use what you've learned to heal the world, starting with yourself!
