Book Reviews of Esperanza RisingBook Review: A Beautiful Story By: Melissa Rivera Summary: 5 Stars
This is about a girl named Esperanza. Her father was killed the day before her 15th birthday. The reason for his death was because in Mexcico your not allowed outside after dusk. He was outside because he was setting up and gathering stuff for her birthday party. Her 15th birthday is like the 16th birthday in the United States for the girls. The next day her uncle Luis came and told Esperanza's mother "if you marry me you will never have to work again." Esperanza said " my mother will never marry you". The next day Mr. Rodriguez came to drop of the fruits. Esperanza opened the door and said, " what's in the box". He said "the fruits your father requested from me". She told him everything that happened to her father. He was stunned by what happened to her father. He said that her father was a very generous person. The household butler said yes I will be taken those fruits. Then Esperanza began to cry. She told Mr.Rodriguez that she really wished he were there for her birthday. She opened the present from her father it was a glass doll. Her father brought her one every year on her birthday. The next day her mother woke her up because of a fire that had started in her house. Then her mother was thinking where they would live now that her house was burnt down. She knew that Luis would make her marry him even if she didn't want to. Then one of the butlers said "well my brother said that I can move with him but I have to help around the farm and pay him as well". I can send him a letter to inform him that we are going over. Then the mother realized that her papers were burnt in the fire. The grandmother said " I can get that later". Just tell Luis that you except his proposal, but you need a week to talk it over with her family. The next day Luis came by and Esperanza's mother said that she would marry him. Luis said " I knew you would come to your senses". When he left they got all of their remaining things together for their big trip to the United States of America. They left as soon as tghe sun went down. The reason why they left at dusk was so that nobody would see them and tell Luis that they were on their way to the United States. Esperanza and her mother hid under a lot of boxes and blankets. The butlers drove the wagon to Mr.Rodriguez's house. They told him that they were leaving and that he shouldn't tell anyone until they wrote him a letter. They said they would write him to tell him they were safe. There next stop was to go somewhee they can get some rest so they can be wide-awake on the ride to the train. they covered the wagon up and sleep on blankets and towels. The next morning they left to the train . Esperanza remembered that her father took her in first class. There were leather seats and a dining car to eat in. She remebered the time she ate mango and her face and hands were very sticky She waved everone hello and good bye. When esperanza saw where they were going to be seated she asked her mothe if that was there seat .She said well this is all we can afford right now. Esperanza said "daddy or grandmother would not allow us to be seated with the bums .Esperanza said well im sorry but this is all i can afford on my own .As esperanza walked in the train she saw a family .There was a family with a son a daughter and a mother. The little girls was very dirty, Esperanza's mother said we have to act like a family . When Esperanza took out the glass doll her father gave her the little girl ran up to her and almost pulled the doll out of her hands. Esperanza pulled back her hands and the little girl went running to her mother .Esperanza's moher said "you should of let her see that doll atless .Her mother said wholed out you hands as i make a doll for her . The doll was made of yarn .When she gave her the doll the little girls face light up with happiness. Then a lady came in the train with four chickens. She had four kids and thats how she supported them .She sold eggs to support them. Then Esperanza's mother said she haves to leave because she was going to be forced to marry her husbands brother. The lady handed a chicken to her and said i hope you make it to where your going .When they got to the boarder their were many people in line to cross some where sent back and some made it to the otherside. When they got to the person .They asked what is your purpose for trying to get to the other side she said because we want to work for money. The person laughed and said go ahead. They were very happy they made it to the otherside .When they got to the place were the butlers brother was they were greeted and had a plate of food ready for the .The next day the started to work .They sent a letter to Mr. Rodriguez and to the grandmother soon they were all to gether like a big happy family .I choose to read this book was because many people make fun of Mexicans but i think they should be treated the same way tou would want to be treated. They come here for a better life then you make fun of them .You dont know how that makes them feel . It really hurts them .
The End
Summary of Esperanza RisingA reissue of Pam Munoz Ryan's bestselling backlist with a distinctive new author treatment.
Esperanza thought she'd always live with her family on their ranch in Mexico--she'd always have fancy dresses, a beautiful home, and servants. But a sudden tragedy forces Esperanza and Mama to flee to California during the Great Depression, and to settle in a camp for Mexican farm workers. Esperanza isn't ready for the hard labor, financial struggles, or lack of acceptance she now faces. When their new life is threatened, Esperanza must find a way to rise above her difficult circumstances--Mama's life, and her own, depend on it.
