Book Reviews of EscapeBook Review: Incredible Journey & Strength! Summary: 5 Stars
WOW....WOW....WOW!! This was a very good book. Carolyn Jessop was married to one of the most prestigious powerful men of the FLDS and her story is amazing. Once again this story had new information. My eyes were opened even further in this book with yet another issue in the FLDS and that is the hidden emotional and physical abuse and violence. This was the first polygamy book I have read with such intense violence and abuse. We all know what a creep Warren Jeffs is but this Jessop guy was horrid!!! He played favoritism, which is a huge contradiction to the FLDS beliefs and he let his favorite wife, Barbara abuse and torture his other wives and their children. Her husband had most of his wives and children living in fear and starvation while he and Barbara were gallivanting around eating and staying in extravagant places. Carolyn Jessops story is very touching and heart breaking. Her escape was a miracle and her children have been saved and they are flourishing into happy healthy kids. This is a good read but reading it may anger you and might bring on feelings you never knew you had. You will have a strong feeling of hate and astonishment towards the callous and crass actions of Merrill Jessop and his Wife Barbara and their many, many minions. This book also made me reconsider why women and children choose to stay in this society of torture. You get an in depth view of how much mind control, brain washing and severe emotional and mental abuse is used and in fact pushed. Elders from the FLDS church and the community push and encourage torture and punishment in order to teach "your" wives and children how to obey and "keep sweet", sickening! Jessop shares the story of men having their wives and children taken from them to be remarried to a more loyal "Man". It blows me away that this is happening in the United States! I recommend this book, and will continue to read further into the madness of Warren Jeffs and the FLDS! Very Good Book!!! http://momsbookshelf.blogspot.com/
Escape
Book Review: Heartbreaking and Moving Summary: 5 Stars
This biography is an amazing tale of a woman's escape from the cult of the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints. Raised in the cult, Carolyn knew that one day she, like her mother, would enter into a polygamous marriage and she became the fourth wife of a powerful leader in the cult and had eight successful pregnancies. She battles the challenges of dealing with her "sister wives," her step-children and her own son's numerous health problems. Eventually Carolyn manages to make her own escape and fortunately manages to bring all 8 of her children to freedom as well. This story perfectly illustrates why it is so important for the government of the states where this cult flourishes need to take action to prevent abuse against woman and children. I admire Carolyn Jessop so much for all that she has accomplished in her life and that she continues to fight for the rights of all people trapped in this dangerous cult. Anyone who claims that FLDS is benignly expressing "Freedom of Religion" should read this book and rethink the idea that freedom of religion means the government should not interfere while others are being abused.
Book Review: Cheers for Carolyn! Summary: 5 Stars
By far this is the best memoir I've read in awhile (and I'm an avid reader). Jessop's tale of freedom from tyranny will stay with you. Her story of the FLDS cult and polygamist lifestyle is so shocking it's almost hard to believe but the fall of the FLDS and its members (including her former husband Merril Jessop and the cult leader Warren Jeffs ) is well documented. I was turned onto this story when I saw the Fall 2009 edition of the National Geographic which showed Merril Jessop, his wives, and his many many children on the cover. The photos looked so staged and unnatural (almost uncomfortable) that I wanted to know more about the FLDS, especially about the women in their long pioneer dresses, and ridiculous hairstyles and found the answers I was seeking in Carolyn Jessop's "Escape." The memoir is well written, definitely a page turner, and surprisingly relatable. Cheers to Carolyn for her outstanding work for her bravery!
Book Review: This happens in our Nation?? Summary: 5 Stars
Escape This book was unbelieveble! We hear about sex slaves in East Africa but here in the USA? Never would have known about this. Carolyn is so right on, this is kept very hush hush and must be completely exposed for what it is, A CULT!
Thank you Carolyn for your honesty in writing this book and your bravery to expose FLDS for what it is. Your strength that emits from this book is encouraging and spurs us on as women to not back down when it comes to our freedoms that we have in this nation. Bravo!
Book Review: Amazing Woman Summary: 5 Stars
Amazing story of a woman who managed to escape the system of polygamy, in spite of many odds. A real page turner, and an eye opener about the situation(s) faced by women trapped within the confines of the FLDS lifestyle. Carolyn demonstrates an indomitable spirit to survive and thrive. Her love for her children, which could easily have prevented her from obtaining the freedom she desperately sought for both herself and them, shows what a courageous and beautiful woman she is. A must read for anyone interested in human rights and/or interested in knowing more about the FLDS religion.
