Book Review: A fascinating and inspiring Christmas gift

Equal is an important contribution to late 20th Century American history. As one reviewer asked, "Could America really have been so sexist only four decades ago?" The answer is simply astonishing. Strebeigh is a master of non-fiction writing - anyone can enjoy this book - you don't have to be a lawyer. It tells the inspiring story of how (mostly) women lawyers fought tenaciously for 30 years for equal rights for women before (mostly) male judges, and finally achieved (most) of the equality that 50% of our people have always deserved and that we now take (mostly) for granted. It didn't happen without a fight, and the issues are still not completely resolved. You will never think about the Supreme Court or the Constitution in quite the same way again. I'm giving it to my daughters and friends for Christmas.

Summary of Equal: Women Reshape American Law

The dramatic, untold story of how women battled blatant inequities in America's legal system.

As late as 1967, men outnumbered women twenty to one in American law schools. With the loss of deferments from Vietnam, law schools admitted women to avoid plummeting enrollments. As women entered, the law resisted. Judges would not hire women. Law firms asserted a right to discriminate against women. Judges permitted discrimination against pregnant women. Courts viewed sexual harassment as, one judge said, "a game played by the male superiors." Against the odds, women fought to reshape the law. Fred Strebeigh has interviewed litigators, plaintiffs, and judges, including Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Catharine MacKinnon, and has done research in their private archives as well as those of other attorneys who took cases to the Supreme Court to make the law equal and just for all.
