Book Review: A Good Introduction to Afghani Embroidery

Beautiful photos, excellent close-ups of some of the stitches. A good introduction to the garment and textile styles of Afghanistan. However, there is one error. In discussing the Tekke Turkmen woman's cloak (chyrpy), Ms. Paine states that a chyrpy of dark green fabric is intended for a young girl.
The chyrpy is a married woman's garment, the color of which indicates the woman's age. A chyrpy of dark green, dark blue, or black cloth, is worn by young married women. A chyrpy of yellow cloth is worn by middleaged women, and one of white cloth is worn by women past menopause. See The Arts and Crafts of Turkestan by Johannes Kalter.

Embroidery from Afghanistan is varied, rich, and sumptuous. This book focuses on over thirty pieces and explores the embroidery of different tribes and their geographical regions. Illustrated in full color and in detail, the textiles included will provide designers at all levels with inspiration for the use of color and pattern in their own designs. In her introduction, Sheila Paine sets the pieces in their social and cultural contexts and investigates the shared traditions of the various tribes. The costumes of men, women, and children are illustrated, as are embroideries for the home and yurt, domestic animals, and precious possessions.
