Book Reviews of Eldest (Inheritance Cycle, Book 2) (The Inheritance Cycle)

Book Review: Here I go again!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have to admit two things - ONE I am newly reborn into the fine art of reading for pleasure after struggling for years as a child with my eyesight and walking away from it for a while (so maybe some of you will think that I am making up for lost time...I would argue that I am having more fun getting lost in such tales) - and TWO that I purchased the first book, Eragon, for my husband while I was re-reading the Harry Potter series. After I finished HP book 6 for the second time (several months after first purchasing Eragon) I decided it was time to find something new. Naturally, I tried to pick up other books that might compare to this series as I needed something to hold off my HP withdrawls until this summer. And this series did it. Even worse...I am now experiencing Eragon withdrawls.

Christopher does a good job of spinning his story and, what I fear other readers have mistaken for "boring middle content", provides us with a great deal of foreshadowing, background information and moral mentoring throughout. Weaving such content together is challenging to any writer and Mr. Paolini deserves a pat on the back for accomplishing this at such a young age (though the Nancy Drew in me was able to predict a few of the outcomes before they were revealed which made the book all that much more enjoyable and left me feeling like a smarty-pants...especially when my husband hadn't seen it coming! ha! Take that Mr. PhD!).

The somewhat seemingly sophomoric love interests (as another critic mentioned) are, I feel, in tune with what would be happening to a boy of only 16 years! Nothing happens from which a young reader should be shielded...so Moms can relax. It is a natural flow and creates some interesting plot turns as well as left me identifying even more with the story's main character as he reached a more human level. Yes, even the great and incredibly brave dragon rider, Eragon, can be vulnerable...and in turn...rejected (this goes for Saphira as well).

With the exception of my dismay that Eragon did not try harder to pursue/protect his cousin any sooner (I understand why he couldn't C.P. - another important plot line to follow in Eldest and more to come in book 3- but I have read much love and devotion for family into Eragon's character and it just didn't seem to fit) my only other remark might be the heavy vocabulary. This is not necessarily a bad thing. As a culture we have lost sight of the art form that is the English language. I found myself looking up a few words but it taught me a little something along the way. My only comment would be that Paolini (or his editors) try to make it feel a little less forced. I regret to report that a sneaky visual popped into my head of a much-used Thesaurus sitting next to a writing desk/editors nook! (*wincing*) Sorry!

There are some influences revealed from other stories/storylines - a trap that is difficult to escape in writing from time to time. Personally, I read it as an homage by Paolini to include references to other great stories or movies that he may hold dear and that which has obviously influenced him and inspired him to become a writer of such things. As creative professionals we are nothing if we cannot have appreciation for those who blazed the trail. My personal favorite (whether intentional or not) is the elf lord, Dathedr-vor, whose name (with the exception of a couple of switched out vowels) fits a nice anagram for Darth Vader. All of these things, however, did not steal the story from me. I still LOVED it and would still recommend it to anyone who has grown to love this genre. Congrats Christopher on a job well done and know this - I am counting down the days that I will receive my third book in this series just as much as I am counting down the days for the final Harry Potter book. Now THAT is saying something!

Summary of Eldest (Inheritance Cycle, Book 2) (The Inheritance Cycle)

Darkness falls?despair abounds?evil reigns?

Eragon and his dragon, Saphira, have just saved the rebel state from destruction by the mighty forces of King Galbatorix, cruel ruler of the Empire. Now Eragon must travel to Ellesmera, land of the elves, for further training in the skills of the Dragon Rider: magic and swordsmanship. Soon he is on the journey of a lifetime, his eyes open to awe-inspring new places and people, his days filled with fresh adventure. But chaos and betrayal plague him at every turn, and nothing is what it seems. Before long, Eragon doesn?t know whom he can trust.

Meanwhile, his cousin Roran must fight a new battle?one that might put Eragon in even graver danger.

Will the king?s dark hand strangle all resistance? Eragon may not escape with even his life. . . .

From the Hardcover edition.
Surpassing its popular prequel Eragon, this second volume in the Inheritance trilogy shows growing maturity and skill on the part of its very young author, who was only seventeen when the first volume was published in 2003. The story is solidly in the tradition (some might say derivative) of the classic heroic quest fantasy, with the predictable cast of dwarves, elves, and dragons--but also including some imaginatively creepy creatures of evil.

The land of Alagaesia is suffering under the Empire of the wicked Galbatorix, and Eragon and his dragon Saphira, last of the Riders, are the only hope. But Eragon is young and has much to learn, and so he is sent off to the elven forest city of Ellesmera, where he and Saphira are tutored in magic, battle skills, and the ancient language by the wise former Rider Oromis and his elderly dragon Glaedr. Meanwhile, back at Carvahall, Eragon's home, his cousin Roran is the target of a siege by the hideous Ra'zac, and he must lead the villagers on a desperate escape over the mountains. The two narratives move toward a massive battle with the forces of Galbatorix, where Eragon learns a shocking secret about his parentage and commits himself to saving his people.

The sheer size of the novel, as well as its many characters, places with difficult names, and its use of imaginary languages make this a challenging read, even for experienced fantasy readers. It is essential to have the plot threads of the first volume well in mind before beginning--the publisher has provided not only a map, but a helpful synopsis of the first book and a much-needed Language Guide. But no obstacles will deter the many fans of Eragon from diving headfirst into this highly-awaited fantasy. (Ages 12 and up) --Patty Campbell

Meet Author Christopher Paolini
Christopher Paolini?s abiding love of fantasy and science fiction inspired him to begin writing his debut novel, Eragon, when he graduated from high school at age 15.

"Writing is the heart and soul of my being. It is the means through which I bring my stories to life. There is nothing like putting words on a page and knowing that they will summon certain emotions and reactions from the reader. In my writing, I strive for a lyrical beauty somewhere between Tolkien at his best and Seamus Heaney?s translation of Beowulf." --Christopher Paolini

The Eragon/Eldest Boxed Set

Want to learn more about the series? Check out our review of Eragon: Here's a great big fantasy that you can pull over your head like a comfy old sweater and disappear into for a whole weekend. Christopher Paolini began Eragon when he was just 15, and the book shows the influence of Tolkien, of course, but also Terry Brooks, Anne McCaffrey, and perhaps even Wagner in its traditional quest structure and the generally agreed-upon nature of dwarves, elves, dragons, and heroic warfare with magic swords.
