Book Reviews of Edie: American Girl

Book Review: The Warhol scene in their own words
Summary: 4 Stars

If you don't know much about the Factory scene, this is a great way to introduce yourself.

If you are not a fan of Andy Warhol, these anecdotes will probably confirm your view.

If you are a fan of Andy Warhol, some of these anecdotes might change your mind.

But, of course, he would excuse himself by claiming to be merely a spectator.

This book is about Warhol and the Factory scene, but also much more. If you appreciate Joan Didion's view of the Sixties, you will find much to mull over here. If your vision of the Sixties is founded on peace and love, you may want to look elsewhere for inspiration.

Book Review: Andy's 'Living' Metaphor
Summary: 4 Stars

Edie appears out of these pages at least as 'temporary' as Andy Warhol's art. In retrospect, I can see she subscribed to his theories and couldn't reconcile them to her blueblood heritage - I read it 20 years ago, but it only just made sense. Many have been down that track but few as committed as she was. Her relevance today may be greater than his, for she is a metaphor for the things of today that no longer work for many people viz urban decay, spiritual poverty and a loss of meaning/vision. Warhol's anti-hollywood and Hollywood became the same thing, and we are all a bit stronger for her legacy.

Book Review: Haven't read it all yet...
Summary: 4 Stars

But so far it's very interesting. It's well written, though the style took a while to get used to, and I spent a lot of time flipping to the family tree at the back of the book, as it was confusing when all these new names started using direct reference terms like "Father", "Cousin", etc.
The first couple chapters were a hard read, but at about chapter 7 it pulls you in, and I've been reading 2 chapters a night since I reached that point.

Book Review: Subject Unworthy of the Approach
Summary: 3 Stars

I love oral biographies (and highly recommend, by the way, SAVAGE GRACE and THE TRUE GEN), and EDIE certainly held my attention. But why? Because Edie Sedgwick was such an interesting personality? Hardly. She was a dime-a-dozen degenerate and, of course, a bore. The same is true of all her godawful cronies, including the insufferably peculiar and talentless Andy Warhol. Oral biographies, however -- regardless of the subject matter -- are always riveting. The approach reminds us that we all have memories worth remembering and stories worth telling.

Book Review: Interesting
Summary: 3 Stars

This book is interesting. It is a little hard to follow because of the way it is written and some of the pictures are a little vulgar but I guess that sums up Edie. It is worth a read for anyone interested in this poor girl. There is something so so sad but so fabulous about her.
