Book Reviews of Eating For Life

Book Review: Couldn't have done it without this
Summary: 5 Stars

When it comes to leading a healthy lifestyle, I am the type that needed to find a structured program. Bill Phillips Body for Life program was EXACTLY the instruction that I needed. This cookbook was absolutely essential to me meeting my goals (from 195 to 175 in twelve weeks).

I won't tell you the twelve weeks was easy, but Eating for Life cookbook helped immensly. Each Sunday, I planned out the weeks meals and went shopping. Twelve straight Sunday's to the grocery store. This book has some lousy recipes, but my wife and I found at least 15 of the dinner recipes to be in our rotation, as well as a few breakfasts and lunches. Just good, simple recipes that anyone is capable of making.

I want to be a witness that you do not have to buy the shakes and bars to do this. The cookbook provides many snack ideas if you are not wanting to drink the shakes. Personally, I hated the milkshakes, but did eat one of the Myoplex bars for my afternoon snack each day. Also, the free day is no joke. I ate freely whatever I pleased one day a week. Honestly, as the weeks went on, I didn't want to "pig out" on my free days. But I wouldn't hesitate to eat fast food, pizza, ice cream, whatever. I earned it.

The key to all of this is to PLAN both your workouts and meals each week. This book will bring you some variety for some very good meals each week, and I would recommend it to anyone who is realistic about wanting to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Book Review: Makes Body for Life SOOOO Much Easier
Summary: 5 Stars

I'll just add to the glowing reviews of this book. I have followed the principals of BFL for 3 years now. The biggest issue my wife and I have had is that you run out of ideas for food, and begin to burn out on the same things. This leads to straying away from balanced meals.

This book should solve this problem. Yes, we've only used it since Christmas, but there are so many recipes here that it should be much easier to follow. In addition, these meals are fantastic! The Chicken Enchiladas are great. The Chili is great. And as someone else mentioned, they have ideas for in-between meals that are so simple yet never occurred to me. Also, for a cooking novice such as myself, the recipes are incredibly easy to follow. I do wish the would have provided a nutritional breakdown per meal, but I can read lables and calculate that on my own.

I also like the fact that this book doesn't push the EAS products at all, my only complaint with the first book, because you can achieve outstanding results without all the supplements or Myoplex.

While some don't like the ripping on low-carb plans, I think they are totally justified. I nearly passed out trying to work out during the first 2 weeks of South Beach. You NEED carbs for energy!

As for the ripping on Bill Phillips for trying to make a buck? Get over it. This is capitalism, Bill can make millions and I don't resent it a bit, he put out a GREAT product. This book has me re-energized on the BFL plan.

Book Review: My Favorite Cookbook
Summary: 5 Stars

Even if you've never boiled an egg, you can make delicious, nutritious meals from Eating for Life. Dinners, desserts, breakfast, smoothies--they're all included. I've made many of the recipes and haven't found a bad one yet.

I'd been a Body-for-Lifer for five years and although I liked the results, my diet lacked variety. Eating for Life changed that with meals that weren't obvious: pudding with protein powder (yes, it tastes great), burgers and fries that aren't loaded with fat, and chip and dip that's so healthy and tasty that I eat it almost every night.

The recipes are realistic. Most of the them don't require a long list of ingredients or exotic foods; everything is available at a conventional grocery store. Every recipe also includes a color picture and the approximate time it takes to make it. For those who know absolutely nothing about cooking, there is a section on cooking utensils and basic procedures.

Only a few things would improve the book. First, most recipe books are organized by main ingredient. Within the dinner section, for instance, chicken, beef, fish and other dinners are mixed together in no apparent order. Second, the index could stand improvement. There's no entry for "fish tacos" for example. It's under "seafood." These are minor points, though. I use this book every day and it has been well worth the price.

Book Review: It's so easy!
Summary: 5 Stars

About a year ago, I tried to do Body for Life but only lasted a week trying to eat from the list of "approved" foods.

But, when my husband and I decided we needed to do something to lose some weight and get in shape, I agreed to try it again. Fortunately, I discovered this book while browsing through the bookstore.

The recipes are fabulous. We've been eating out of the book for a week and have yet to find a recipe we didn't like. In fact, I can't believe just how easy Body for Life is with this book - it's almost too good to be true!

The serving sizes are perfect for a married couple or single person. There's usually enough for dinner and one or two servings for lunch the next day - however, the recipes could also easily be doubled for larger families.

You don't need to be a gourmet chef to prepare the meals. The recipes are easy (most are prepared in 1 hour or less) and some even contain pictures of the ingredients at the bottom of the page. Perfect for people with busy schedules (like mine).

An added bonus: the back of the book contains a shopping list and menu planner that you can copy (or download from eatingforlife.com after you've purchased the book). Very helpful when planning your weekly meals and doing your grocery shopping!

I highly recommend this book for anyone (Body for Life or not) who wants to eat healthier and feel better!

Book Review: Great healthy recipes!
Summary: 5 Stars

If you like to eat healthy and want some really delicious recipes, then this is the book for you! I bought this book years ago and finally pulled it off the shelf the other day and read it. I wish I had done that sooner! The first 75 pages are an introduction by Bill Phillips. Although I regard myself as being a pretty healthy eater, his tips and tricks were great reminders of how to maximize your body's potential. For instance, he explains that the key to maintaining your health is eating a variety of different foods. This means diversifying your carb sources, vegetables, and protein sources. This book tells you exactly how to do that so that you're not stuck eating the same ole egg whites and ground turkey, day in and day out. I have about 0 cooking experience and I've found the recipes very easy to follow. I just made the turkey meatloaf, mashed red potatoes, and green beans dinner. Not only is it incredibly healthy, but it's also delicious! It's 100X better than my usual tuna fish or bland chicken breast that I bring to work everyday. Bottom line: If you want to eat healthy and still eat delicious food, Bill Phillips tells you all you need to know in this great book.

And by the way, if you are worried about counting your calories, he gives you an internet link that breaks down the caloric content of each recipe.
