Book Reviews of Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual

Book Review: Fantastic Endgame book. Why is it not a beginner's book?
Summary: 5 Stars

It is a great book. I won't explain why because many other reviewers have already done that very well.

Why is it not a beginner's book? One example is that it assumes you know how to do all the elementary mates: mate with queen, rook, two bishops, knight and bishop, etc. Another is that it doesn't spend a lot of time on the fundamentals such as simple pawn ending concepts. It zooms through some of it pretty quickly to get to the meaty stuff. It also sometimes states something along the lines of 'and now white is won' in positions that wouldn't be obvious for the beginner and might even be a challenge for them to analyze.

If you are a beginner then I'd recommend Karsten Muller's: Fundamental Chess Endings. To go along with that I'd recommend his Endgame DVDs from Chessbase; The first DVD is about 4 hours long and to my knowledge there is no place that you could get such a good overview of endgame theory in just four hours of DVD watching. You can't learn it in only four hours, but you can learn something about what it is you should know but don't yet know.

Is Dvorestky's book a better book than Kartsen Muller's? I think it is a different type of book. Dr. Muller's book has the word 'fundamentals' in the title and I think that explains the key difference. When I am reading an endgame topic in Dvoretsky's endgame manual I sometimes I look to Dr. Muller's book to beef up my fundamentals so I can follow what Dvoretksy is trying to teach. Dr. Muller lays down the fundamentals without much philosophizing about the positions and then Dvoretsky often elaborates with some deeper concept that I'm not sure a beginner would really care about. For example, Dvoretsky and Muller both talk about opposition and distant opposition, however I believe only Dvoretsky describes a necessary condition for distant opposition to be useful.

Summary of Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual

A modern classic. The first edition of Dvoretsky ?s Endgame Manual was immediately recognized by novice and master alike as one of the best books ever published on the endgame. This second edition is revised and enlarged "now over 400 pages "covering all the most important concepts required for endgame mastery.

Dvoretsky?s Endgame Manual...may well be the chess book of the year...close to an ultimate one-volume manual on the endgame. -- International Grandmaster Lubomir Kavalek in the Washington Post

Dvoretsky?s most significant book. It gives the ambitious player a chance to do top-level training, but also gives the amateur a chance to see what is really important. If any chess book can make you a better player, this is it. -- International Master Jacob Aagaard

The noted Russian trainer has produced a classic guide to learning the endgame...Highly recommended! -- International Master John Donaldson
