I have to admit that I was extremely skeptical of this book. Nothing in the description really explains how this is supposed to work or what you have to do to make it work and I was afraid it might be another book telling me to buy an alarm. It's not, I have found. Here are the details:
The first half of the book is for parents. It had some good tidbits, but it's mostly a "don't worry, it's ok" sort of reading designed to put you at ease about what is often a stressful situation. I found the attempt to remove the negative connotations of "bedwetting" by calling it something else a little cheesy, but if it puts some families at ease I won't call it a negative. I also didn't really appreciate the assumption that parents reading the book are probably responding negatively to the bedwetting and need to be told to chill out. Perhaps that sort of response is more prevalent than I realize and it really could be encouraging to a parent who is responding in such a way.
The second half of the book is a story, a long repetitive story. You only have to read the whole story once and bigger kids can read it all by themselves. I have two bedwetters out of four kids, so we just sat down and read it as a family. Everybody enjoyed the story (except for me, but I lack patience for repetitive things). Once the story is read, each day the child reads or looks at the pictures of a small portion of the story just a few pages long.
How does that help? There are three key factors I see that work in this method. First, there is a lot of repetition in the story that really drill the themes home. This repetition is continued as children review a portion of the story each day.
Second, the story encourages children to use visualization. The story starts with a girl who wants to stop wetting the bed and she gets a book about a boy who wants to stop wetting the bed, so the visualizations are there for both boys and girls. The pages kids are directed to look at every day are in the boy section, but there is the same set of story and illustrations in the girl section, also, so both genders have a section to connect with. The visualizations help kids hold it, wake up if they can't hold it, and sleep and wake up dry.
Finally, and probably most importantly, the book empowers children to take responsibility for the issue themselves. This removes that powerless feeling from the equation and gives children something they can do each day to solve their own problem. Not only are they supposed to read or look at pictures of a portion of the story themselves each day, but they are encouraged to do what they are capable of in regards to helping clean up if they do have an accident. The story also tells them that controlling their bladder is a lot like controlling any muscle in their body and empowers them to do so through the visualization techniques. There is also a chart in the book that you can make copies of and the children can keep track of their own progress.
Does it really work? Well, in our family, I have one son (9) who wets the bed once or twice a week and another son (7) who wets the bed almost every single night. We don't make a big deal out of it in our house, but steps to help the boys get through the night dry weren't working and this was an inexpensive option to try. Both boys are sticking to the plan and, for the first time ever, we have had nearly a full week of dry mornings. Neither of my boys has wet the bed since we first read the book. Since this method empowers the children and changes their way of approaching the issue, I am confident that this is a long-term solution to the problem of bedwetting.
It's easy, inexpensive, and it works.
*As I write this, I see that Amazon is only offering the book through vendors and some aren't so inexpensive. Check your local library and, if they don't have it, ask if they can get it on inter-library loan. Used copies can be found from vendors hosted by various book dealers and you might check ebay, too. I hope the publisher will consider making this title available again.
