Book Review: Sad History That's Almost Too Personal for Stars' Son
Summary: 3 Stars
This sad, depressing book is a son trying to deal with the father he never knew and the mother he doesn't understand. It is filled with lengthy quotes from friends and co-workers of Bobby Darin & Sandra Dee. But in the end the entire piece feels distant and incomplete--like a son who still can't quite figure out who his parents were.
The most odd thing about the book is that the author/son spends more time on his dad's career and almost none on his mother's career. He totally glosses over major Sandra Dee movies--so instead of gaining any insight into Gidget, he brushes the movie aside in one sentence. Meanwhile he spends pages on a single song that Darin sang.
The biggest reveal in the book is that Sandra Dee's mother lied about her age, so she was starting her movie career at 13 and already kissing men about ten years older! It's hard to believe that she was so young because she looked so mature for her age.
Not much uplifting here--you feel sorry for the son who desires to have known his dad and to figure out his mom. But you have to give him credit for being honest about his feelings, no matter how depressing they are.
