Book Review: Brilliant - A return to the authors' origins.
Summary: 5 Stars
Over the years, Weis and Hickman, collaboratively and individually, have brought us some great adventures. I've always felt that their strongest novels were Dragonlance - the world and the characters that populate it are just brilliant.
This book is all about Kitiara and her scheme of tricking the knights of Solamnia into going on a quest to claim the dragon orb, knowing that it will only cause corruption and chaos. The book takes turns following Kit's adventure and the knights' adventure. Everything is extremely well written. The plot is always interesting, the characters portrayed perfectly. I only have one tiny bit of criticism - the last 30 pages of the book. Leading up to the end of the book, there's a huge battle and we have our climax... and then comes the last 30 pages, which is all about Kit gaining the allegiance of Lord Soth. The writing of this part of the book felt like an after thought. Really though, that's the only negative I have, and still not enough to detract from the rest of the book.
5 Stars. Now I need to go back and re-read Chronicles.
Summary of Dragons of the Highlord Skies (Dragonlance: The Lost Chronicles, Book 2)
The Chronicles retold--from evil's point of view.The story starts in Neraka, where Kitiara uth Matar and Emperor Ariakas hatch a plan to retrieve a dragon orb and thereby destroy Solamnia and the Companions in one fell swoop. But the guardian of the dragon orb, Highlord Feal-Thas, disagrees with this plan. Kitiara must go to Ice Wall to force him to accept Ariakas' will, but her journey does not end there. Thrown out of favor, she conceives a daring plan to enlist the aid of the most feared beings on Krynn--Lord Soth and the Dark Queen. Meanwhile, Laurana and the Companions retrieve the dragon orb and take it back to Solamnia--not knowing that they bring their allies' doom with them.
The second volume of a new trilogy from celebrated authors Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, The Lost Chronicles details the famed War of the Lance from the perspective of the evil that menaces Krynn. The books are written in such a way that they will be marvelous complements to the original Chronicles, while at the same time accessible and exciting to new readers.
