Book Reviews of Dragon Prince #1 (Dragon Prince)Book Review: Amazing! Summary: 5 StarsThis is one of my favorite book series of all time, if not my favorite. Highly recommended for anyone who loves fantasy, romance, drama, and damn good writing.
Book Review: Slow start, but great ending Summary: 3 StarsBottom Line: Try before you buy
This is a good book...regardless of it having a slow somewhat mediocre beginning (with the boy father dying and how that was portrayed). A good adventure book, following a young somewhat reluctant hero character as he attempts to make his own way (or feel his way along), as the new leader.
It did pick up quite a bit, after the father died..and the introduction of his chosen (or picked for him) bride.. There were lots of characters to keep your attention and help move the action along. The bad guy was great, as was his stable of unwed conniving and plotting daughters. Not much erotic in this book.
It skipped a little, or fast forward in time, and left you wondering what had happened since there was just a sort of short summary.
Overall though, it kept my attention, and definitely had me wanting to read the next in the series. I'd give a 3.5.
Book Review: Great cast of characters! Summary: 5 StarsI may be a slightly unusual reader in that I accidentally read the second trilogy first- so I got to know many of these characters when they were much older, or through the eyes of others after they had died. However, I have to say that out of all six books, this one is unreservedly my favorite. It is action packed and the imagery is excellent, not to mention the universe that it's set in is fascinating. The concept of "Sunrunning" is still one of my absolute favorite interpretations of telepathy and conjuring, and I read this book for the first time well over a decade ago. This book has political machinations, dragon fighting, personal betrayals and a touch of romance sprinkled in, but is never fluffy.
The real strength of this book, however, and the ones that follow it, is characterization. The cast of characters is very sizable and very quickly introduced (not to mention all related to each other in various esoteric ways) so keep looking at the family trees for the first twenty pages or so (or just reread it later- there are enough levels to the court intrigue that you'll be discovering new stuff for some time). However, for such a large cast, you get to recognizing them very quickly.
Book Review: The best of the series Summary: 5 StarsDragon Prince is by far my favorite book in the Dragon Prince trilogy. Prince Rohan has just ascended to the throne of the Desert following the untimely death of his father, Zehava, during a dragon hunt. His aunt, a powerful sorceress (or Faradhi), has arranged his marriage with a Faradhi named Sioned. Rohan sets out to create a better world for his people, using his wits and his sword to battle High Prince Roelstra.
The book was paced perfectly, able to keep the reader's attention without feeling rushed. The majority of characters are three dimensional. There are plenty of times you are disappointed with the main character while sympathizing with the antagonists, but that is what makes them so identifiable. Melanie Rawn has created a seamless and unique world, one which stands apart from other Fantasy books. It is well worth the read.
Book Review: Magic and Romance, who could want more. Summary: 5 StarsI've read the complete series. Rawn draws you into each scene, crafting the picture as some would sculpt. I laughed, I cried and I will definitely always be a Rawn fan.
