Book Review: Great cast of characters!

I may be a slightly unusual reader in that I accidentally read the second trilogy first- so I got to know many of these characters when they were much older, or through the eyes of others after they had died. However, I have to say that out of all six books, this one is unreservedly my favorite. It is action packed and the imagery is excellent, not to mention the universe that it's set in is fascinating. The concept of "Sunrunning" is still one of my absolute favorite interpretations of telepathy and conjuring, and I read this book for the first time well over a decade ago. This book has political machinations, dragon fighting, personal betrayals and a touch of romance sprinkled in, but is never fluffy.
The real strength of this book, however, and the ones that follow it, is characterization. The cast of characters is very sizable and very quickly introduced (not to mention all related to each other in various esoteric ways) so keep looking at the family trees for the first twenty pages or so (or just reread it later- there are enough levels to the court intrigue that you'll be discovering new stuff for some time). However, for such a large cast, you get to recognizing them very quickly.
