Book Reviews of Dr. Nicholas Romanov's Pose Method of Running (Dr. Romanov's Sport Education)

Book Review: Excellent Book on "The Method', a little Pricey and Could Have Been more Compact, Worth the Read
Summary: 4 Stars

I have run (pun not intended) through the Chi book and watched the evolution of running DVD but I found this book very helpful in describing the Pose method in detail and in particular the diagrams do a great job demonstrating the correct posture versus the wrong. There are difference in the explanations and in Pose I had a greater impression that the lean did not have to as significant as I thought under Chi. And in Pose, the author discusses lifting the ankles under the center of the hips and letting gravity allow the legs to fall without as much need to push off. Chi emphasizes kicking the feet back, which may be the same but sounds more difficult but also discusses allowing gravity to have its effect. Both books are well worth reading particularly as they emphasize reducing impact on the joints and running more efficiently. Writer Matt Fitzgerald indicates that studies show form changes don't often help runners run faster based on bio mechanical differences and needs, but he does admit that efficiency can be improved and all agree that barefoot running, when and where you can do it, is essential in learning how to run more efficiently. In the book, the author takes a long run up to give a biographical revelation on how he discovered the Pose method in 90 plus pages but it is a quick read. Quite a lot of the book is composed of exercises that assist you in learning and training for the method as well as numerous exercises to strengthen your core muscles allowing greater ability to sustain balance and the lean. The latter part of the book has excellent examples of the right and wrong way, the simply graphic showing the right lean versus the wrong was very helpful since I found myself doing too much of a forward lean. I also have/am guilty of concentrating more on leg turn over versus the right way to land. A clinic course would be helpful but from doing the drills and practicing the components one or two at a time (doing everything right all at once is a lot to concentrate on) it appears to be doable even possibly for an old heel striker like me. The book is a little pricey (5 stars if more compact) and I think a more compact version would have been just as good but it is worth the read but consider buying on Amazon used.

Book Review: Its all about paying attention to every detail
Summary: 4 Stars

In my continuous search for ways to keep on running while the body slowly deteriorates, I came across this book. It is a much deeper, scientific look into more of the areas that I first found in ChiRunning (although perhaps the Romanov techniques predate ChiRunning) .

This is a very easy to read book with scads of exercises and supporting activities such as flexibility and strength building activites. It is very well researched applied science and is being used many high perfromance coaches and their athletes.

The big eye opener for me was how he takes the forward lean, relaxed foot approach of ChiRunning much further along the entire foot and up the leg. Example, he stresses how you want to have minimal heel lift, landing on the ball of the foor, with minimal push off , so that your body does not rise and fall as you run. His practise activities really show you how to get gravity working for you with running. Again, it comes down to attention to detail in the execution. My natural run has become even easier, when I thought I could not get it any easier. If you take your running seriously this is a great resource for you. [...]

Book Review: Excellent introduction to Pose running
Summary: 4 Stars

This book does a great job introducing the concepts of Pose running. It starts with basic theory, and then works its way into practical application. It has lot of drills to help you learn the "feel" of Pose running, as well as plenty of exercises to condition your muscles for the demands of the new running technique.

Perhaps, as another reviewer suggested, you can find all of this information on the web for free. But surely the time you would spend searching would not be worth the money you would save. This book has it all in one convenient place.

I switched over to the Pose style several weeks ago, and have already seen the benefits, including increased speed and the elimination of the need for clunky running shoes.

The only negative about the book is that some of the explanations are little confusing (forgivable given English is not the author's native language) and the font style choice was less than optimal.

Book Review: Improved my hiking and time
Summary: 4 Stars

Although this method is designed for running, it vastly improved my hiking, walking pace and time. It really helped with knee stress and has led to improved aerobic ability. I am slowly getting back to running because of the Pose Method. I first heard about this from a friend who is a marathoner. It is amazing what just a few technique changes can produce.

Book Review: Pose Method of Running
Summary: 4 Stars

Read other reviews that almost led me not to buy this book. It is ACTUALLY a great read and provides logical analysis of running techniques. The author teaches the basics of his Pose Method of running but provides a number of analogies that get the reader to think about why he was led to this method. Buy it. I suspect you wont regret the purchase.
