Book Review: Might be something to it but... Summary: 2 Stars
Somewhat disappointing. Goes into detail about how our diet affects us etc. All well and good. But as for a practical realistic option, maybe for some people but not for us. Basically this book is saying that everything my son eats (and I mean everything!) is bad with a capital 'B'. There is literally nothing my son eats that is acceptable according to this book. Everything that he "should" be eating...well let's just say he'd starve.
This book does provide an alternative to medication, and I think there is merit to it. But for our family it ain't gonna happen.
Book Review: A diet "guru" arrogantly expressing his ignorance on ADHD Summary: 1 Stars
First of all, the book is *not* about ADHD -- it's a set of ill-expressed and more or less pertinent dietary recommendations interspersed with anecdotal information about how diet changes have improved the life of various people with ADHD-like (as well as totally unrelated) *symptoms*.
Here are just a couple of samples of the nonsense of which the book is full:
1. Arrogance: "No one has really addressed the underlying cause of hyperactivity, ADD, ADHD and ODD (Oppositional Defiance Disorder). Trust me. There are a lot of variables. I have read and researched articles, books and history. There is no picture painted by any particular authority. Most of the information, with a few exceptions, is speculation." (page 2)
The author's ridiculous "trust me" is pretty much in synch with using as endorsements of his teachings quotes from "reputable" sources like "Fast Food Nation", "USA Today" and various books of fellow diet "gurus".
2. Ignorance: "In 1908, a scientist named Metchkinoff recommended the daily consumption of yogurt because he felt it promoted good health and prolonged life." (page 124)
If the author bothered to even Google the inexistent name, he would have found right after Google's kind "did you mean" spelling correction a wikipedia page on Ilya *Mechnikov*, who was a scientist awarded the Nobel prize and not some guy who recommended yogurt because he had a feeling it promoted good health.
In conclusion: save your money -- I've bought this book to serve as part of my education on ADHD after I've been diagnosed with it a while ago, and found it to be by far one of the most worthless books I've read (in general, not only on ADHD).
If you're interested in learning about ADHD, I would kindly recommend two criteria in selecting what you read. On one hand, it helps makinig sure that the books are recent, because the body of knowledge has evolved significantly in the last couple of decades. And on the other hand, you might want to Google the name of the author to make sure that it really means something in the scientific community that studies ADHD (my fault that I didn't do this before buying this book).
Book Review: This book is a total lie and ADHD is a confirmed medical condition Summary: 1 Stars
[...] After reading this book, I have never felt so insulted in my life. I was diagnosed with ADHD 9 months ago and medication turned my life around. ADHD has been confirmed with thousands of FMRI scans to be a chemical condition. This book helps fuel the ignorant fire that says ADHD is something in your head. I can tell you first hand that my ADHD, my mother's, and my sister's was and is not in their heads.
By withholding medication from children and adults not taking it, you are all robbing yourselves and your children of the healing and amazement that comes with being able to finally have your mind be able to focus and remember what you are learning. I was diagnosed at 22. I missed out on getting the highest marks in my class for the first years of college, I missed out on remembering what I learned for years. I only wish I had been diagnosed sooner and had started taking medication earlier.
People who think ADHD is something "in your head" or can be cured if you just try hard enough are kidding themselves and are ignorant, especially in 18 Days. I am insulted that my condition which caused me so much hurt and underachievement when I was growing up can be brushed off as being cured with diet. It's sad. I hope people become more informed.
