Book Reviews of Down the Nile: Alone in a Fisherman's Skiff

Book Review: An Intimidating River
Summary: 5 Stars

The Nile is an intimidating river. I have sailed along on its surface many times, but have always had the security of a large and somewhat luxurious hotel-boat beneath me. I can't imagine rowing on its crest. I am no rower. Rosemary Mahoney is, and she is also a clever and talented writer.
I recognize the realities of upper Egypt in this book, and can recall many of the same things she reports. Her conversations with Egyptian men are another thing altogether, however, but I am certain that they did and said what she tells us. I have known many Egyptians, and some of them are entirely capable of that kind of behavior, although many of my friends are not.
The glories of el nil are all along its banks, and although Mahoney doesn't talk about most of them, they are a staggering presence for anyone who travels the Nile. It is those things that most tourists go to see, but this books tells us about the small islands and inlets along the way, and the interesting, struggling populace who live among the reeds on its shores.
There is no river like the Nile, and Mahoney gives us an intense look at the small, the unnoticed, that usually passes below the scanner of a tourist on a big boat.
Herbert L. Smith, author, "Cairo: The Mother Of The World"

Summary of Down the Nile: Alone in a Fisherman's Skiff

When Rosemary Mahoney, in 1998, took a solo trip down the Nile in a seven-foot rowboat, she discovered modern Egypt for herself. As a rower, she faced crocodiles and testy river currents; as a female, she confronted deeply-held beliefs about foreign women while cautiously remaining open to genuine friendship; and, as a traveler, she experienced events that ranged from the humorous to the hair-raising--including an encounter that began as one of the most frightening of her life and ended as an edifying and chastening lesson in human nature and cultural misunderstanding. Whether she's meeting Nubians and Egyptians, or finding connections to Westerners who traveled up the Nile in earlier times--Florence Nightingale and Gustave Flaubert among them--Mahoney's informed curiosity about the world never ceases to captivate the reader.

"A pilgrimage about pilgrims and holy places that is not only enlightening but also very funny." -Paul Theroux (on The Singular Pilgrim)

"Mahoney is a wonderfully effective catalytic agent: she goes to Ireland and just makes the country happen around her." -Jonathan Raban (on Whoredom in Kimmage)

"Mahoney, who has been rowing for 10 year, brilliantly juxtaposes an account of her own palm-blistering hours on the Nile....with the diary entries of two Victorian travelers-Gustave Flaubert and Florence Nightingale."
--Lisa Fugard, New York Times Book Review
