Book Review: A worthy addition to your knitting collection
Summary: 5 Stars
Written for knitters of any skill level (though maybe a beginner might consider Stitch 'n Bitch or the Complete Idiot's Guide), this book really does offer excellent advice to "whip your knitting into shape." I have been knitting for about 7 years and find her advice quite helpful, especially her 8 rules of knitting and her design philosophy.
Because I think both of those things are important to know when buying the book, and since you could easily scope them out if you flipped through this at a bookstore, I will discuss them briefly. First, if you are a "trendy knitter," this book will either set you straight or scare you off. Stafford's design philosophy is as follows: no "pillowcase," baggy, shapeless anything - people assume the worst about your figure; use classic, clean yarns, not frilly novelty yarns (that, might I add, go out of style before the project is off the needles); use one focus to keep your design from being too busy (a lot of old-school knitters would be well advised to listen there); and create clean-lined garments with stitches that don't distract from the overall design.
Also, her 8 rules of knitting, again paraphrased, are as follows: be careful before you rip, but don't avoid it; carefully consider both the project and the yarn before you start a project; avoid distractions when working on a difficult project; hold the needles correctly; KNIT A GAUGE SWATCH (lol); there is no such thing as a mistake - only a lesson to learn; if you knit clothes, they need to be wearable; and challenge yourself to excellence when you knit. Clearly she elaborates with many pages on these themes, but I list them to scare away people who will not agree and to entice the curiosity of anyone who might be intrigued.
The patterns in this book are EXCELLENT. They span accessories like a mohawk hat to some really good looking sweaters. While some might consider them to be "dark," I am not goth or punk and would have absolutely no trouble adapting the major projects to suit my conservative style. Her writing style is sharp and witty and really a pleasure to read. The only complaint I have with the book (and it's a really minor one) is that her nails are natural, unpainted, and long, and look somewhat "witchy" in the photographs. That's /it/.
