Book Review: The Book is as Atmospheric as the Cover

I read this one at home, but I wish I'd been able to read it while camping or in a rustic cabin. The book was chilling enough as it was, and I really enjoyed it--it's the perfect book to devour (so to speak) shortly before Halloween.
The story begins when 10-year old Brad Brown's father is mysteriously killed while stalking something very odd while on an elk hunt in the Uintah Mountains of Utah. Fast forward to an adult Brad, who has spent his life trying to come to terms with his father's death and the terrifying night that he spent alone with his father's body. Brad has become an accomplished hunter and is quite wealthy, but nothing he kills is ever big enough or dangerous enough to bring him to closure over what happened when he was a child. Years of therapy are not helping, and his relationship with his girl friend, Kelly, is on the ropes. After a chance find on the Internet, Brad becomes convinced that he and his father may have encountered a bigfoot. He seeks out bigfoot researcher Jesse McCoy, who experienced his own life-changing event in the woods a few years earlier. Before long, Brad, his girlfriend, a couple of buddies and Jesse are heading toward the Devil's Ridge in Kentucky on an expedition to find--and in Brad's case, to kill--some of the "monkeys" that come to feast on the autumn harvest in the nearby fields. The group presses on, despite warnings about those who have simply disappeared after getting too close to the Devil's Ridge during autumn. Growing tension, followed by mayhem and terror, ensue.
I enjoyed Bergeron's novel because it is well-crafted, thrilling and not preachy. He doesn't take sides or debate the question of whether bigfoot is real or legendary, he just lets the story unfold in a plausible, compelling and scary way. It's the kind of tale that even a bigfoot skeptic like me can thoroughly enjoy. I highly recommend this book.
