Book Review: Informative reference, buy this book for the pictures!

My mother pulled me aside at Thanksgiving and politely suggested that I get some help my wardrobe. OK then! This book got me started. I've since read other style books, each has their own strengths and weaknesses. The best part of Details are the pictures that accompany the informative text. I would recommend this book first because the pictures are so informative. I would anticipate that it will influence other style books -- seriously -- style books should have LOTS of pictures, right? And that is the criticism of the book: I soon wanted a few more carefully chosen pictures for each section, ones that convey the subtlety between good choices and items that just don't quite work. A few pictures in the "Do not do this" heading were outlandishly ridiculous. Comedic, but not all that helpful to state the (truly) obvious. I personally could have used more information on coordinating colors, the area that I have the least confidence. However I have a lot more to work with now than before. The second style book I would recommend is Men's Style: The Thinking Man's Guide to Dress. A huge contrast to Details, no pictures. But it offers depth and it is an interesting read on the history of men's clothes. The two books complement each other well. I just turned 45. Details is designed to attract the younger generation male, however, I found most of the information applicable -- men's style doesn't change that much, thank goodness. I learned enough to start updating my business, casual, and weekend wardrobe. I located a tailor and have updated my measurements, I'm buying clothes that fit properly! Just as important, I have learned how not to destroy my clothes in the laundry/dry-cleaning cycle. Honestly, I've had a ball shopping for clothes/shoes for the first time in my life. Mom and I went out to dinner recently, she was proud. Thanks to mom for the "heads up", I really appreciate it.
