Book Review: A complete overall in editing

When I read this book at its first publishing, to say I was disappointed with the book would be putting it mildly. I was disgusted with the non-existent editing, and poor grammar and blatant publishing errors. However, I was extremely excited to hear that it was being revised, professionally edited and republished, so I purchased it. The re-published effort had received a complete overall in the editing department and the sentence structure has improved greatly. That is where the improvements ends.
The story JM tells is full of events boarding boredom and, indeed, unbelievable. The style in writing is leaden and the prose limps along like a deep sea diver on the seafloor. Characterizations are trivial and uninspiring and the dialogue mind-wrenchingly poor. This is a great pity since it has a serious negative impact on reading the book, which stops being a pleasure and becomes a trial, no matter how interesting the subject matter may be. One of the principal weaknesses of this novel is the author's inability with time sequences, as she awkwardly weaves family history or past events into the narrative unsuccessfully. Another is the way in which suspense is built up with curiosity and delay, only to be dropped, or ending poorly from the build-up. People familiar with the publishing world in any case might have a more negative response to the work since they are more likely to have strong preconceptions of the characters and events involved and these might be compromised by the author's obvious lack of knowledge of the publishing world, or the media production industry. Another minor caveat is that the cover illustration is misleading and doesn't represent a successful ranch as it appears in the text.
The test of a good book, either fiction or non-fiction is if it will pass the test for being a candidate for a re-reading, or will it be thrown away in my clutter basket. This book passes with flying colors to occupy my clutter basket. Sorry, but editors can only do so much.
Summary of Define Destiny
Catherine Warriorson was a woman without any hope. Immensely powerful when it came to the monetary things in life but emotionally she had committed her heart to the depths of despair. Forsaking everything she once knew, including her friends, she locked herself away virtually alone in a ranch called Destiny. All she wanted was to be left alone with her own demons to live her life as a recluse. Jace Bardley was a young woman on the brink of a fruitful career with a film production company and the experiences of the world at her feet. When her latest project for her film company trespassed on an uncooperative and reclusive landowner's property in New Zealand, little did she know that the experiences of the world good and bad were literally going to begin right there. Life never appeared so easy to manipulate until the scheming of old adversaries intervene. Taking the two women on a journey that would test their inner character strengths and the emotional ties that bound them.
