Everyone in Lochdubh are quite taken with the charming gentle lady, aptly (so they think) named Mrs Gentle. Constable Hamish Macbeth has his doubts though after he sees her in an unguarded and less than flattering night. The two begin a quiet test of wills with the future of the Lochdubh police station, and it's occupant (Macbeth) at stake. When Mrs Gentle's maid, the lovely Ayesha, comes to Hamish looking for help Hamish sees an opportunity to solve all sorts of problems in one fell swoop, if he and Ayesha marry she will not be deported, Hamish (and his cat and dog) will remain in Lochdubh and the villagers will stop pitying him as a loser at love. It all seems to be going according to plan until the bodies begin to appear (or disappear) and all too soon Hamish finds his love life more a topic for discussion and pity than ever as he attempts to sort through the various clues to find the murderer. His efforts are aided, or hampered by more than one woman who finds the lanky constable quite a catch.
Fans of this series will not want to miss the episode of Hamish's adventures, and will take delight in the latest woman trying to get Hamish's attention. There is also a hilarious interlude at the end of the novel that will delight long time fans of the series as Hamish finally gets the odious Inspector Blair back for all his dirty tricks. Those unfamiliar with the series will probably want to begin at the beginning DEATH OF A GOSSIP and read through the series in order.
Summary of Death of a Gentle Lady (Hamish Macbeth Mysteries, No. 24)
Gentle by name, gentle by nature. Everyone in the sleepy Scottish town of Lochdubh adores elderly Mrs. Gentle - everyone but Hamish Macbeth, that is. Hamish thinks the gentle lady is quite sly and vicious, and the citizens of Lochdubh think he is overly cranky. Perhaps it's time for him to get married, they say.But who has time for marriage when there's a murder to be solved? When Mrs. Gentle dies under mysterious circumstances, the town is shocked and outraged. Chief Detective Inspector Blair suspects members of her family, but Hamish Macbeth thinks there's more to the story, and begins investigating the truth behind this lady's gentle exterior.
