Book Reviews of Dean and Me: (A Love Story)

Book Review: WOW
Summary: 5 Stars

I have the Audible version and have to say it again...WOW.

This is one one heck of a memoir/bio delivered by the only person that could deliver it in such great detail and depth...Jerry Lewis himself.

I am way too young to have known or viewed their comedy "act", but this book brings it all to life so vividly that I am on my second listen just so I didn't miss anything on the first listen and also it was really just a great story.

I went ahead right away and purchased "DINO" by Nick Tosces so I can continue to learn about everything that occured in that era including the Rat Pack.

I was very surprised that the book was so well written. To be honest, I only bought the audio because I had a credit towards a book and I figured "what the heck". Now I'm wondering what took me so long.

Book Review: Unexpectedly poignant
Summary: 5 Stars

Jerry's right -- this is a love story. And, as with most love stories, one always loves more. With Martin and Lewis, it was Lewis who loved more. He clearly adored his partner, the big brother he never had. He rhapsodizes about Dean's talent and his cool. The anecdotes he shares are affectionate and funny and, at times, very sweet.

I came to this book not especially enamored of either man. Since they broke up before I was born, I was only barely aware that Martin and Lewis had ever been a duo, and found hearing about their meteoric rise fascinating. But I came away from the book less impressed with Dean Martin than his partner. Passive aggressive, almost pathologically remote and chronically unfaithful, I don't share Jerry's high regard for Martin. With Lewis adoring him so blatantly, I feel like I should apologize.

Book Review: Who are they writing about?
Summary: 5 Stars

All these people who bad mouth Jerry Lewis as being self centered and not giving credit to Martin...who are they writing about? Sounds like these people can't forgive the break-up. Dean and Jerry did. Everyone who has ever watched (and loved) these two performers has hurt by the break up as well. I'm not blaming either. I realize that "stuff happens!" And also...since I wasn't there myself personally to see and witness with my own eyes...I'm just going to have to assume that "life took it's course." As it does for ALL HUMAN BEINGS! Dean Martin was a helluva singer! Jerry Lewis was as funny as any man that ever walk upright! Both...I'm sure would go back and re-do lots of things from their past...just as ALL of us would. Lewis did right by Martin.

Book Review: Dean and Me (A love story)
Summary: 5 Stars

With candid portrayal of his start and 10 year "gig" with Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis captivates us and we can't put the book down. This is no white wash flowery story; he tells the imperfections of both of them. You know it's love, even after their breakup of the team because Jerry reveals allot about his partner Dean Martin that we never knew of.

In short the Jew did good. Jerry always wanted to mix comedy with tears. Dean didn't like the sad mixing stuff; just make 'em laugh. However Jerry got his last wish with Dean, 'cause in the end of the book the clown made a full grown man cry. Jerry instead of making me laugh, at the end, warmed my heart about his love for his partner and made me grab a tissue. That was low pool Jerry.

Book Review: Dean and Me: (A Love Story)
Summary: 5 Stars

Being a long-time fan of Mr. Lewis, I may be considered biassed in writing this review. Honestly, I read this book with an open mind with no tendency of leaning to Mr. Lewis over Mr. Martin.

Mr. Lewis opens his heart and mind in this bio of being one half of a famous duo. He does not gloss over his short-comings nor those of Mr. Martin's.

The book is humorous, tragic and insightful into the lives of two 'regular' guys that come together and become a world-wide sensation.

Thank you Mr. Lewis for your straight forward approach to your life and Mr. Martin's. Thank you for the many years of happiness you have given your fans. Your gift of humor has sustained many throughout the years.
