Book Reviews of Dead to the World (Southern Vampire Mysteries, Book 4)

Book Review: I love Eric! I can't wait to see what comes next.
Summary: 5 Stars

I have read the Sookie series through this installment. I can't wait to see what happens next, but after reading several reviews, I know it takes a while for anything to happen with Eric (sigh) who I'm continually routing for. I liked Bill, and even after this book I get him: dark vampire, awful history, crappy human memories, family/love loss, following rules, not wanting to be involved but can't help attachment. He clearly has commitment issues. I mean Eric has issues, now that his memory is back, he's back to his old self, or is he? He was controlling, dominant, and relentless, but Eric was there in every situation, every time something bad happened to Sookie, and always takes care of her. He has to be wondering what happened between him and Sookie, you don't wake up in a closet in the house of the woman who keeps turning you down, while she looks like she's more than willing to have him there, and not wonder how that happened and why. I think he has always cared more deeply about her than he lets on. I think Sookie has too many relationships and probably has a fear of commitment.

Okay, if Sookie got married to anyone, that would be the end of the largest drama in the love life category. She can't marry a vamp, and doesn't want to become one. She can't make up her mind about the shape-shifters who have made offers. She probably doesn't want to become a Were, either. So what are the choices for an independent woman who keeps falling in love (or maybe, lust is the more appropriate word) with someone different in each book?

I will continue reading this series. I am fast reader and I read all 4 books this past weekend. Unfortunately, I know that when I finally finish book 9 (all too soon) I'll be dying to read the 10th book...2010, really? Well, shoot. I really hope something happens more with Eric and Sookie. I really like Eric, I really like Alcide, too, but from what reviews I've read the whole Alcide thing doesn't work out. I read mention of someone named Quinn, as well... Sookie, make up your mind! She likes Sam, too, and he likes her, but as long as she works and lives in Bon Temps, it's just a bad idea to date your boss. Besides, I think Sam should be with another shape-shifter. I like Sam and he deserves to be with someone long term, from the same magical species. And, oh, have I mentioned this already? I really like Eric. I hope at some point Eric and Sookie talk about their time together in Dead to the World.

I've never watched True Blood. I have seen clips here and there, the characters are similar, and the place is similar, but it seems the stories are different and the characters are just different enough to not compare the two. I don't watch True Blood mainly because I can't stand the sight of blood, fake or real. I don't get scared or frightened or anything, I just can't see blood. I love CSI and NCIS and I used to watch ER all the time. I love vampire stories and I've seen them all (Moonlight's still my favorite), but I can't watch the blood. From what I did see, I don't like the casting of True Blood, so even without all ridiculous bloody scenes that aren't in the books, I wouldn't watch it anyway.

My one final comment has to do with a few reviews I read that mention what good character development Ms. Harris has, not to mention that there are some "scenes" in this series of books (particularly the one in this book with Eric...yum) that seem to be appreciated by readers. Not to mention this series seems to get better and more detailed as it goes. I also wanted to point out that a series of books can continue even if the main character is in a permanent relationship, especially in one with a vampire. I have to recommend a series of books by J.R. Ward: The Black Dagger Brotherhood. They don't have to be read in order, but it certainly helps in understanding all the subtle changes in the Brothers. The order is Dark Lover, Lover Eternal, Lover Awakened, Lover Revealed, Lover Unbound, Lover Enshrined, and Lover Avenged. These books have foul language, some bloody fight scenes, and some rather graphic love scenes. So, naturally, they're fantastic books to read, and very addicting, too. I've read the whole series twice. Each book gets better and better. It doesn't follow standard romance novel format. Couples fight and have arguments and have to work at their relationships, but the love is deep, true, all encompassing, and truly moving. For more info, or to view excerpts from these books, and for some short stories (that aren't crucial to the series, but are fun to read) visit [...]. It's a great series of books, I cannot wait until the next book. Oh, and unlike the Sookie series, each one of these books has, well, maybe not a happy ending, but whatever main couple is involved, there is a definite conclusion and the couple themselves are happy in their love and devotion to each other.

Summary of Dead to the World (Southern Vampire Mysteries, Book 4)

"With the sure touch of a master" (Crescent Blues), Charlaine Harris delivers "the sort of vampire thrills that make Laurell Hamilton's Anita Blake novels so popular" (Locus). In Sookie Stackhouse-a Southern cocktail waitress with a supernatural gift-Harris has a created a heroine like few others, and a series that puts the bite back in vampire fiction. Now the hit series launches into hardcover for Sookie's biggest twist-filled adventure yet.

When cocktail waitress Sookie Stackhouse sees a naked man on the side of the road, she doesn't just drive on by. Turns out the poor thing hasn't a clue who he is, but Sookie does. It's Eric the vampire?but now he's a kinder, gentler Eric. And a scared Eric, because whoever took his memory now wants his life.

Watch a QuickTime trailer for the HBO original series True Blood.

From Emma Bull's War for the Oaks to Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series, from The X-Files to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, creators are mixing old European myths and legends with modern American pop culture. Incorporating influences ranging from blaxploitation movies and erotic novels to tabloid staples like UFOs and Elvis, authors and directors are creating a new mythology for the strip-mall, tract-house, cell-phone America of the new millennium.

One of the best-known and best writers of the new American mythology is Charlaine Harris. Dead to the World is the fourth novel in her Anthony Award-winning Southern Vampire series. It continues the story of psychic waitress Sookie Stackhouse, who has fallen out with her undead lover, Bill. Bill has no sooner departed for Peru, than Sookie finds the head vampire, Eric, running naked and terrified through the rural night. She helps Eric, and discovers his memory has been destroyed by a coven of unscrupulous, astonishingly powerful witches, newly arrived in her small Louisiana town, and offering a huge reward for Eric. Sookie tries to hide Eric, but her brother sees him--and immediately disappears. And Sookie finds herself caught in a war among witches, vampires, and werewolves. --Cynthia Ward
