Book Reviews of Dead as a Doornail (Southern Vampire Mysteries, Book 5)Book Review: Shifter Troubles Summary: 5 Stars
Dead as a Doornail (2005) is the fifth Rural Fantasy novel in the Southern Vampire series, following Dead to the World. In the previous volume, an alliance of Shreveport supernaturals raided the witchy intruders and won the battle, but with a few casualties. Once again, the Fangtasia was missing a bartender. Eric Northman recovered his memories, but also lost all recollection of the time with Sookie Stackhouse while he was cursed.
Jason Stackhouse was finally found, bitten by a werepanther, but still alive. Calvin Norris, leader of the werepanthers in Hotshot, promised to look after Jason if he turned during the next full moon.
In this novel, the full moon draws Weres and shifters out into the night. Jason may be experiencing his first change and Sookie worries that he will hate it. But he is so thrilled with the experience that afterward, in his own way, he waxes poetic.
The next night, Sam Merlotte is also eager to slip out into the woods for some shifting as soon as Terry Bellefleur relieves him. The bar is quite busy when Sookie arrives; Holly Cleary and her friend Danielle are being swamped with orders. Sookie puts away her purse, says hello to the cook, and start tending to customers.
Sweetie Des Arts, the new cook, has only been working at the bar for the past week. She is an efficient and reliable worker and Sookie hopes that she will stay for a while. Not that the bar ever keeps cooks for long, but the last few have stayed for less time than usual.
Sookie worries about her friend Tara. Lately she has been dating an older vampire, Franklin Mott, but tonight Tara comes in with a younger, brasher vampire. Mickey drinks Red Stuff rather than TrueBlood, a clear sign that he is rather crude for a vampire.
Later there is trouble between a Louisiana Tech student and a regular customer. Jeff LaBeff may be a redneck, but he is usually not very quarrelsome. Sookie has to step in to stop the fight and the college kid takes a swing at her. After hitting him on the head with her tray, she cools him down by threatening to tell his mother about his improper behavior.
Then a Drainer comes into the bar and Sookie picks up her thoughts about how few vials of vampire blood are in her coat pocket. Sookie finesses her out of the coat and hands it to Terry, who ditches the vials. The Drainer starts to make trouble, but abruptly changes her mind about mentioning the blood. As she leaves, Mickey watches her and makes a cellphone call.
The next night, Claudine come into the bar to tell Sookie that Calvin Norris has been shot and taken to the hospital. Calvin is a workcrew leader at Norcross and has taken an interest in Sookie. As if all this isn't enough, Sam is shot in the leg by a sniper while leaving the bar after closing time.
In this story, Sookie has to ask Eric, the Vampire Area 5 Sheriff and owner of Fangtasia, for the loan of somebody to tend bar and act as bouncer while Sam is laid up. Of course, Eric is very happy to do a favor for Sam, or is that a favor for Sookie? Eric still wants to know what happened between them while he had been cursed by the witch.
Then the private detectives show up asking questions about Debbie Pelt. Since Sookie had shot Debbie (in self-defense), she is a little leery about answering such questions. It doesn't help any that Eric was the only witness to the killing and he doesn't remember anything about that period.
After all this, Alcide Herveaux shows up at her house while the detectives are still in town. Since he was once engaged to Debbie, they might be interested in such visits. Moreover, Alcide wants Sookie to get involved again in the affairs of the Shreveport Were pack. Then someone sets fire to her house.
This story evolves into sheer confusion. Some werepanthers suspect Jason of shooting Calvin, but the police soon learn that someone has been traveling around the South killing shapeshifters. But when the killer is identified, Sookie's problems are still not over.
Highly recommended for Harris fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of preternatural creatures, murder mysteries and persevering heroines.
