Book Reviews of Dead Witch Walking (The Hollows, Book 1)Book Review: wild, trippy fun! Summary: 5 Stars
wow..talk about a fertile imagination! Harrison's debut novel takes the whole 'urban fantasy' genre to the next level. She's created a universe that's a twisted and dark version of the one we live in.
Rachael Morgan is a runner for Inderland Security. She's also a witch. She and her pixie backup, the oftentimes annoying but always helpful and entertaining Jenks try to keep order in the Hollows by bringing in those supernaturals who don't always follow the rules.
What are the Hollows you ask? Well it's the dark underbelly of Cincinnati. This goes back to what I said about the universe being a twisted and dark version of the one we live in. You see, in Harrison's world there was a point in time in human history called the Turn. Decades ago scientists unlocked the secrets of human DNA, not unlike our own real history. However, Harrison turns this on its ear. In her universe, humankind never went to the moon.Science perverted the discovery of the secrets of human DNA and chose to manufacture bio weapons. In her universe, humankind never went to the moon because all the scientific advancement was used for people to crush their enemies using these bio weapons. The Turn as it's called was the point in history when mankind nearly destroyed itself by shipping out these bio weapons hidden in TOMATOES of all things. Almost half the human population was eradicated. Enter: The Inderlanders.
Inderlanders are the supernaturals. Vamps, pixies, Weres, witches, etc, etc. They actually stepped up and helped stop the extinction of mankind. They'd always been with us in Harrison's universe but knew a total eradication of humanity wouldn't be good so they came out of the shadows. Even their help didn't lessen the blow to humanity that the monsters they thought were just stories were actually real and have been living amongst them for as long as anybody knew. As a result there's the us vs. them mentality and out of that came two peacekeeping forces. The FIB, Federal Inderlander Bureau, and the IS, Inderlander Security. IS is the policing force made up of supernaturals to keep the bad ones in check. The FIB is human counterpart. The two don't entirely like one another naturally.
Rachael works for IS, and she's good. She's a Witch and a great runner for the IS but keeps getting horrible assignments (tax evading Leprechauns anybody??) and seems to hit a streak of bad luck. She wants out and she knows her boss wouldn't miss her. Problem is, you can't just quit the IS. You have to pay off your contract with them. Rachael in effect quits at the beginning of the book thinking that it would be square with her boss because he doesn't much like her anyway. Problem is she doesn't have the money. If you can't pay off your contract they put a price on your head if you leave. With the IS gunning for her, you can see why the book is called Dead Witch Walking.
Rachael leaves anyway and takes Jenks and her living vampire partner Ivy with her. Not only is looking around every corner to keep herself from getting dead a complication but living with a living vamp isn't exactly what Rachael expected either.
So that's just a taste of what you can expect from this novel. A witch with a price on her head, a living vampire and a foul mouthed pixie for partners, tax evading leprechauns, pixie/fairy wars, werewolf assassins, demon assassins...All of this and the ability to make a cohesive and great adventure story out of it makes this one heck of a fun read. It's about as much fun as I've had reading a book in a long time.
I look forward to spending more time in this imaginative universe that Harrison has created! Her take on supernatural creatures from myth, lore and fairy tales is great fun and her characters are fun to read. Rachael is fallible and not a psycho shoot first ask questions later vamp slayer like Anita Blake so it's refreshing to read a new take on a character from a very crowded genre. You'll have fun with this one!
Summary of Dead Witch Walking (The Hollows, Book 1) The underground population of witches, vampires, werewolves?creatures of dreams and nightmares?has lived beside humans for centuries, hiding their powers. But after a genetically engineered virus wipes out a large part of humanity, many of the "Inderlanders" reveal themselves, changing everything. Rachel Morgan, witch and bounty hunter with the Inderland Runner Services, is one of the best at apprehending supernatural lawbreakers throughout Cincinnati, but when it comes to following the rules, she falls desperately short. Determined to buck the system, she quits and takes off on the run with an I.S. contract on her head and is reluctantly forced to team up with Ivy, Inderland's best runner . . . and a living vampire. But this witch is way out of her league, and to clear her name, Rachel must evade shape-changing assassins, outwit a powerful businessman/crime lord, and survive a vicious underground fight-to-the-death . . . not to mention her own roommate.
