Book Reviews of Day by Day Armageddon (A Zombie Novel)

Book Review: Best Zombie Book I have EVER read!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Quite simply the best zombie book I have ever read. I am a huge fan of the sub genre of zombie horro in general. This book gets the job done.

First, the first person perspective you get from this is great. The author writes this as told by the journal entries of the main character. It is so well done you feel like you may actually be reading a zombie holocaust survivor journal! It really gets you wrapped up in the story.

Second, the action moves quickly. Let's face it, you are reading zombie fiction to be entertained, and fast! This isn't War and Peace, nor does it try to be. The action moves quickly, but the author does a great job on character development, especially the two primary people.

Third, and this is the most exciting part for me, he really addresses the "logistics" of a zombie plague. The planning, rationing, equipment the character needs, etc. pulls you into the fantasy. I always wonder, what would you need in a real zombie outbreak? A fictional problem for which the author gives practical real world answers... makes the whole story feel more "real"

A fast read, great action, and all zombie... what more could you ask? I am "dying" for the sequel.

Book Review: An excellent look into a nightmare world
Summary: 5 Stars

Leaping from the web to the printed page, this book is an updated edition of the utterly engrossing tale of one man's survival in a zombie-shattered world. Written convincingly by first-time author J.L. Bourne, a currently-serving Navy officer, this work takes the form of the journal of the protagonist, known as by his callsign of "Raptorman", as he encounters and overcomes the challenges of surviving in a world where the dead have begun to rise up and attack the living.

While some have taken liberties with the genre established by George A. Romero, Bourne stays closer to convention. He writes with an eye to detail, giving his matter-of-fact style a realistic edge that only heights the understated tension. It very effectively makes one question, "what would I do?" in a similar circumstance. The author's lack of experience shows at times but also adds authenticity to his work in this case.

Spawning other works in the genre, this is a fantastic take on a popular theme. Anyone interested in post-apocalyptic or zombie-themed fiction would do well to pick this up. I can't recommend it enough.

Book Review: Diary type Zombie books
Summary: 5 Stars

I liked the layout of the book. I acidentally bought this at a half-price books this past weekend and zipped right through it. It was believable and not very blood/gore. You are left with the possibility that these "creatures" have something to them, since many times they stand/stare at the main location for no apparent reason. The possibility of the dead living below water freaked me out and was a great "where did they go" tie-in. HOWEVER!!! I am not a person that deals with too many facts, especially in fiction, but I had a major problem with the silo. If the group of people had been quaranteened in the silo since before the outbreak...how did the officer (the one tied up to the chair), come back to life? If in fact the only way to transport this disease is via Saliva. I really hate the scavenging as it makes me very tense when they enter buildings to look for food. I live in the San Antonio/Houston area, I am very familiar with all the areas of interest (even Victoria). We had a map out and traced the route of the survivors as they made their trek. GOOD BOOK, but too close to home.

Book Review: Very Fun Quick Read
Summary: 5 Stars

I had heard about this book many months ago when I was looking for more zombie stories to read and this one always had some of the highest ratings. I was skeptical about picking this up because of it's journal entry format and wasn't too sure how I would like that. Well after just finishing the book I'm very glad I decided to pick this one up. I devoured (that's right) this book in a few sittings and loved every moment of it. This book is very easy to read and just flows really great with the way it was written. Since it is a day by day journal of a man's life as he lives in this post-apocalyptic zombie infected world the story is kind of raw but that is the charm of it. Most of the entry's are short but you really get a sense of how this person is coping/surviving in this situation. The writing is trimmed down with not a whole lot of details and almost no dialogue to speak of but this is what makes this book so interesting and fun to read. I highly recommend this book for all zombie fans out there.

Book Review: Could NOT put it down.
Summary: 5 Stars

The guy who writes the introduction said he basically fell of the face of the earth to read this book. I thought, "There is no way this book is THAT good."

It was.

I started reading it at 10pm and finished it at 2am last night. The journal format really makes it easy to just keep reading. I thought the (slightly tacky) underlining and smudges gave it a more personal feel--anyone who complains about this is just uptight. The characters didn't have overwhelming descriptions, but that just follows part for the apocalyptic journal feel. Would you write a lengthy paragraph writing about what color John's hair is, how straight or curly it is, and the texture in your zombie journal? I think not!

Plot is simple survival, but that's all you really need in a good zombie book. Many different locations are involved, which really shook up the scenes. I don't want to write anything specific about the plot because you need to just buy the book and find out for yourself.
