Book Reviews of Day by Day Armageddon (A Zombie Novel)

Book Review: A Journal of the Infestation
Summary: 5 Stars

I am not hugely well versed in the world of zombie stories and this is really the second book I've read with such a theme. I was intrigued by the fact that it was written in journal format. I really enjoyed the way "World War Z" was setup, and that kind of made me interested in other ways of presenting literature, so I snatched this up considering all the praise in the reviews.

I tore through this book very quickly. I simply couldn't put it down. It really does feel like you're reading through a first hand account of the zombie apocalypse. Here we join the story of Jon a member of the military trying to make his way in a zombie infested world. Jon brings us on a journey starting right before the zombie invasion begins. He brings us through the rumor infested beginnings to precarious survival after it reaches epidemic proportions.

For me, this book kept me on edge always wanting to find out more about what happened. I really like the format the book is published in. It actually looks and feels like a journal. Though not hand written, there are pictures of photographs posted throughout the book. There are also hand drawn diagrams to give the reader a better sense of the area. I felt this added an air of authenticity and gave the book a more unique feel.

J.L. Bourne has definitely shown me that he has some serious literary talent for constructing a story around this scenario. I simply can't wait for the next installment. For my first few steps into this genre, I am greatly pleased.

Book Review: I found a book I like!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have NEVER been a book reader, unless it was a fact driven type book. Reference, etc..and throw in a Popular Mechanics magazine too, to satisfy all I needed in reading.
I was at a local thrift store a few days ago and saw this on the shelf, and pulled it out to see what it was all about (the name caught my attention). I made a quick flip through the pages, and initially loved the 'journal' style I saw it written in. I reluctantly, tossed it into the pile of books my wife was getting for her and the kids, thinking in my own mind that it would end up like all the other books I bought over the years to try and get into reading, and end up right back at the thrift store. BOY was I wrong!!! The 79 cents I spent on this book was the best 79 cents ever! I was hooked from the first page until the last! This is the first book that I have EVER read from front to back..and I did it in a few days..(not bad for a non reader). My mother In Law is really wanting to read it now after I told her about it. I am sooooo looking forward to the promised sequel.
I am not sure if the strong attraction to this book was the "journal' style or the genre, or both. It had a non reader glued though!
Loved this, and thanks to J.L. Bourne for this book, but most importantly, his continued service to this country!! He has a few things on his plate now, so I will wait more than patiently for Part 2.
Until the sequel comes out, and suggestions on what book would be next in this genre for me to try?

Book Review: DAY-BY-DAY IS A PAGE TURNER
Summary: 5 Stars

Much like the zombies in Day By Day Armageddon...this book really snuck up on me. It's a fast 200-page read from the perspective (and journal) of one man trying to survive in a world overrun with the undead.

On the plus side, all the situations are perfect for fans of the zombie genre. The character's motives, actions AND reactions all ring with a certain air of truth. The book works as an homage to any of the Romero films where the reasoning why the undead are returning to life isn't as important as the need for the last humans to fight for survival. It's clear that the author has a solid basis for the military, flying, and weapons and this adds a solid level of believability to the proceedings. I especially like that the character actually takes the times to do and address items that most readers would find themselves saying, "Well, you should do this." It's very easy to support an intelligent protagonist.

The minus side is pretty light. Clearly Day By Day Armageddon is the work of a first time author (and smaller publishing house) and some editing may have serviced the novel in sections. There are some grammar issues, although wisely the character mentions that in the writing of his journal not all grammar will be perfect (so it works as a good safety net).

For fans of the zombie movies who are looking to venture out into literature, Day By Day Armageddon is a good place to start. It will keep you entertained and "hungry" for a sequel.

Book Review: The perfect world for me
Summary: 5 Stars

In one whole day I read the whole book cover to cover instead of trying to catch shoplifters doing what they do best like I get paid to do. Being that I am ex-military and a total zombie fanatic I see this book as a masterpiece. J.L. Bourne is the George Romero of Zombie Fiction novels and his military way of thinking shows through the main character in every decision he makes. Hands down the best I've encountered yet and I doubt that any of the other garbage zombie books that pop up when you type in the word Zombie on any search engine are going to even come close too or equal to this book. I hope that Mr. Bourne reads his book reviews. If you are reading this review, first and foremost thank you for your service from one military man to the next, and secondly I am deeply saddened that the book did not keep going. I could have literally just kept reading it until eventually the world is overun by zombies for real LOL. To anybody reading this trying to make up their mind on whether to buy this book...DO IT NOW, BEFORE YOU BUY THE OTHER GAS STATION ZOMBIE NOVELS OUT THERE. I PROMISE YOU WON'T WANT TO EVEN READ THE OTHERS AFTER. For the people who left bad reviews because of the format in which it was written or whatever your reason...Get Real. You need to go back to whatever crap it is that you were reading because your not on J.L. Bourne's level anyway. Buy the book, it's worth the $$$ if you are a true zombie fan.

Book Review: Nice book
Summary: 5 Stars

Day by Day was the second zombie literature I've read besides the Resident Evil series. I felt the author did a wonderful job in creating an unnamed protagonist who readers can relate to. I thought the journal approach to telling the story is a wonderful idea.

Overall, the book is very good. The story has "Romero" style zombies: slow, presumably dumb, and only one kill spot. I felt the story approached the subject of zombies very well and realistically. It uses real life places, and it even uses real life people to add to the realism (ex. President Bush, etc). The book definitely will make you think twice about how you would survive in a catastrophic situation - I'm not just saying a zombie outbreak, but an disaster of any kind where it's literally you versus the world.

I think any zombie fan should get this book. I must also add that the author is very active with fans of the book. So it's very good to see the author being active with actual fans of the book. Besides Drew Karpyshyn, and SD Perry, I believe J.L. Bourne is becoming one of my favorite authors. I can't wait for the follow up to Day by Day Armageddon. The author made it very clear at the end (as well as on his website) that he's writing a follow up. Hopefully it'll come out sometime in 2008 and it can pick up in popularity.
