Book Reviews of Day by Day Armageddon (A Zombie Novel)

Book Review: I was not expecting to be this impressed!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been a "fan" of zombie-fare for close to 25 years now. My first exposure was an article about Romero's "Day of the Dead" in an ancient issue of Cinefantastique. I was too young to see it in the theaters, so years later I finally caught it on VHS. As my first real exposure to a "zombie movie" it set the standard for me:

1) Zombies are slow, shambling creatures that are to be feared in numbers but are manageable with enough resources (like firepower and a good army base) at your disposal.

2) People are likely to be as big of a problem as the walking dead when Z-Day hits. Important safety tip.

Day by Day Armageddon (DbDA) perfectly fits into that niche that I think of as "what zombie stories should be". We have hordes of undead shuffling about, dumb as stumps, but hungry and present in ever increasing numbers. Humanity is reduced to a handful of those lucky(?)-- or prepared-- enough to outwit and evade the flood of corpses wandering the land.

The book is written in a 'journal' format (hence the "Day by Day") and reads much as a diary would. (If you read others' diaries, *ahem*.) I was surprised at how quickly I adapted to the format and "didn't notice it" after a few pages. (Even though there's not a lot of books out there when you never know the name of the main character... but then how many people except for the occasional schizophrenic call themselves by name in a journal?) I confess that I do not entirely 'get' the cover-- it's not really a manual on zombie survival... (FM-PAS,Z... Field Manual-Post Apocalyptic Survival, Zombie.) It did make me laugh though. :-)

While it's hard to argue "realism" in a zombie novel, Day By Day Armageddon does a good job on conveying "our" world-- just overrun by zombies. Clearly the author has experience (or at least very good research) with much of the equipment he writes about since factual errors are few and far between. This adds an enjoyable 'authentic' feel to the work-- the polar opposite of movies where machine guns never run out of ammo and a brand new BMW can be hot-wired in 5 seconds with a screwdriver.

Part of the fun of the Zombie-doomsday genre are the "what would I do" thoughts that inevitably creep in to the back of your brain on those long drives home while stuck in commute traffic. DbDA pays plenty of attention to dealing with things once common but now rare-- food, shelter, other people. I found it hard not to pause and consider what, if the "SHTF" right now, would I do?

The story moves along in what is perhaps somewhat predictable (overall) terms if you've seen Romero's films or read other works like The Walking Dead, Book 1 (Bk. 1), but rarely was the plot tedious or overly forced on the reader. (Save for the very end where I did find myself slightly frustrated with the characters for overlooking what would seem to be the obvious... and some technology related "liberties" taken for the sake of the plot. Sort of like "all modems are 100 million bits per second in the movies"-- computer technology is frequently a weak spot in many modern novels/films, IMHO. Gotta keep it interesting for the non-computer nerds though, I get it!)

All in all I found Day by Day Armageddon a *very* enjoyable read. I blew through it in two nights of a few hours reading each. It's the first novel I've read in a long while, so faster readers could likely finish it easily in a single session. With the exception of the ending I found very few nits to pick. Strange formatting and the occasional typo just added to the 'journal' feel for me. It's certainly worth the price; I would gladly pay for a dozen more zombie books of this quality in lieu of most of the low-budget zombie films that I've suffered through!

(Good lord. I just voluntarily wrote a book report. If my 4th grade self could see me now...)
