Book Reviews of Dauntless (The Lost Fleet, Book 1)

Book Review: Real sci fi at it's best
Summary: 5 Stars

I absolutely loved this book. After all the watered down sci fi that's really futuristic fantasy and hides behind magical elements, it's nice to see someone get back to basics. The author - having actually served in the navy - certainly knows his fleet logistics and makes all the interactions believable under the circumstances. Adding to the realism is the fact that he bothers to incorporate physics into the story, not claiming that there's some sort of magical way of getting instantaneous information in normal space. My only minor complaint is that while I loved Geary, I would have loved to see some more developments of other character, especially Cpt. Desjani, but there's always the next book.

Book Review: ... Some have greatness thrust upon them.
Summary: 5 Stars

The first hero of a hundred year war awakens out of hibernation to discover that he is needed again. As the last surviving member of a peacetime navy and its training he and he alone remembers what the admiralty has forgotten or never knew. Tactics and the ability to navigate between the stars by means other than the hypernet gates will keep him and the fleet alive, but honor and discipline are what will bring them home.

This is Military sci-fi at its best. Campbell does a great job of describing battles and situations across vast amounts of time and space. His explanations of military structure and dynamic do nothing but add to this great novel.

Book Review: EXCELLENT SPACE ADVENTURE
Summary: 5 Stars

I won't go into details- many already have...What I enjoyed about this book and book 2 is that it reads smoothly- a Story- not a textbook with lots of scientific "data" and convoluted made up equations...just enough "space talk" without drowning the reader in it! ..I know many will dismiss this book because it lacks what I call the Headache feature-overdose classroom syndrome...I buy a book to READ not study and discect!- escapism at its best, Thank you -and this one nicely fits the bill....smooth transition from Dauntless to book 2 Fearless and I am looking forward to book 3

Book Review: Some of the best sci-fi I've read
Summary: 5 Stars

This has to be some of the best science fiction that I've read. For reference I'm a fan of John Scalzi and Robert Charles Wilson, but this series has topped anything I've listened to so far (I downloaded the unabridged audio version of this book). I'm nearly done with the fourth book, Valiant, and I'm so disappointed that it is going to be over soon. I can't believe I have to wait until 4/2009 for the next in the series...

If you are into space battle-like sci-fi, you owe it to yourself to try this series.

Book Review: Original and Fun
Summary: 5 Stars

I picked up this book and read the back cover and thought well that sounds different. I was not disappointed. The book is original in that it is military sci-fi with character development and growth. Black Jack Geary's thoughts as he trying to adjust to his new surrounds are amusing and totally in character. This book not only has great space battles and a 100 year war, but interesting characters that are more than military automatons. This is a full and interesting world I look forward to reading more about.
