Book Reviews of Dauntless (The Lost Fleet, Book 1)

Book Review: Leadership Primer
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been a big John Hemry fan as I teach Behavioral Sciences and Leadership at a military academy. Hemry (writing as Jack Campbell here) always gets both the military feeling and moral magnitude spot on. In this book, however, he really nails the importance of leadership and followership in a way I haven't seen before. In a story about a great man, he disassembles the ludicrous notion of Great Man Leadership Theory and shows that leadership is about effort, forethought, and your relationship with your followers. I have recommended this to my students in my Leadership class as an illustration of what goes wrong with the wrong person at the top, and how they can each turn things around if they work hard enough. Yes, the moral imperatives are there--as with all Hemry's books he shows that leadership without ethical considerations is by definition, empty.

Oh yeah, and it's a GREAT read! Can't wait for the next in this series!

Book Review: Fantastic
Summary: 5 Stars

The Lost Fleet is written by John G. Henry author of Universal Law and the Stark series under the pseudonym Jack Campbell. I thought the Universal Law series was well written but lacking in action. The Lost Fleet is quite cleverly written and has non-stop action. Black Jack Geary became a martyr fighting a hopeless holding action preventing a Pearl Harbour attack on the Alliance by the Sydics. For generations his heroism has set the standard for the Allaince Navy. Now Black Jack Geary's life pod is picked up and he's back among the living after 100 years. He must lead the Alliance Fleet, cut off deep in enemy territory, fighting both the Syndics and his own legend. Black Jack shows that he is a hero, just not the one from his legend. Can the fleet live with the person who the legend was built around? Can Jack convert the recklessly brave mob that is the Alliance Fleet into a effective fighting force?

Book Review: Read all of these they are awesome
Summary: 5 Stars

I am a fan of military Sci Fi but this series blows me away. this is one of the few series I have reread many times. When a new book is released I always read the previous again, not so much to remind me what is going on but more to put the "movie" into context again. I read 6 to 8 novels a month and this is the only series I truly cannot wait until next book comes out! If you are thinking of buying this book, buy all of them. They move fast and the plot line does not have that stupid "transition" book problem most multi book series have. The tech used in the story is easy to get and it make real sense to anyone with a minor curiosity in space combat. I enjoy stories that use logical space physics, not the star trek airplane in space nonsense, turn and bank in space like a plane yea right, no time lag due to the speed light travels.Oh yea and the subplot really keeps the reader interested.

Book Review: And in the beginning...
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a well written book which most folks will enjoy. If you're looking for aliens, dragons, etc. you may want to go elsewhere. If you're looking for characterization and military type action and decision making, look no further. I love sci-fi as much as the next geek but enjoyed this book for the writing and characters. It just made me realize again I enjoy reading for pleasure. Too many sci-fi books want to impress you with their over the top technology and cast of freakin' thousands. Hey, I read for escapism and a good time. That's the way Campbell writes. If an author wants me to work at having to enjoy his or her book, I'll go back to school and get my PHD to make it at least worth my time. Gimme a break. I digress....this is an enjoyable book and I think/hope Campbell's building for a slam bang finale. (I'm starting the 3rd in the series right now.)

Book Review: WOW!
Summary: 5 Stars

That's about all i can really say. (Awesome might work) I like space opera and this really was a full serving.

Space battles and battle stratagems based on the fact that what you see is only as fast as light. Meaning, you might see something that occurred 4 hours ago or 10 minutes ago all based on the relative location of you and the object you're focused on looking at. Not necessarily new, but something most popular fantasy based science fiction leaves out. Sound is not faster than light and the laws of physics is the law.

The year that it took for the second book (Fearless) to be released is really a long time. I hope the 3rd book in the series will be released quicker.
