Book Review: Darkness Calls-A Joyfully Recommended Title!!!

Maxine is still in Seattle ridding the world of all sorts of demons, and while Maxine feels some guilt over settling in one city - as it goes against everything her mother taught her - but Maxine can't help but stay and be with Grant and the rest of the motley family that has forms around her. However, Maxine is facing a greater foe than ever before and she has no idea how to deal with the magnitude of this evil being or how to protect those she loves. Not knowing which way the attack might come, Maxine chooses to stick by Grant's side - the one person she feels is at the greatest risk. But keeping Grant safe might cost Maxine much more than she ever thought and through the process she will learn some truths about herself, her family, the enemies she faces and how Grant fits into this supernatural world that Maxine always expected to face alone.
As Maxine and Grant embark into this new dark adventure that brings up people from Grant's past and revelations about Grant's origins that none, even Grant himself knew. But surprises come at Grant from sources he never imagined, until the only constant thing in Grant's life is Maxine.
Darkness Calls continues the gripping tale of Maxine, Grant and the demons they battle. Marjorie M. Liu continues to create a world that is compelling with its mix of the "normal" world and the undeniable presence of the paranormal, demonic and "other" that make for a world that will keep you up well into the night to find out how, exactly, Maxine and Grant will get out of the way of the current danger they face and prepare for what is surely coming next. In this installment, Maxine is finally coming to terms with her need for human contact and finally realizes that they might not be the anchors that she needs to remain human when she wields all the power she has at her disposal. Maxine continues to be the most compelling character within the collection of characters that are slowly becoming integral to the outcome of Maxine's battle against evil. Grant emerges to become a force of his own with his own brand of power that he has never questioned, but is finally forced to face the strength and source of his power. As the band of characters that surround Maxine in her battle against evil grows, so does the richness and complexity of fantastic world Marjorie M. Liu has built keeping you glued to your seat and turning the pages until the last word is read. I was absolutely spellbound by Darkness Calls from the very first word, but most especially during the most confusing times when I struggled along with Maxine and Grant to understand how all the strange threads of evil in their lives twine together, and why, but all they seem to do is pull Maxine and Grant closer together, rather than farther apart. The suspense and romance in this book has left me most eagerly waiting for the next installment of what is becoming a legendary saga! However, it must be noted that the romance in this novel, unlike the previous installment, is part and parcel of the primary storyline surrounded and supported by all the people Maxine unwillingly brings them into her family circle. Get yourself Darkness Calls when you want a fascinating urban fantasy read that has plenty of action, romance and intrigue that will leave you panting to catch your breath!
