Book Reviews of Darkly Dreaming DexterBook Review: Different than I expected...in a good way Summary: 5 Stars
I had watched the first season of Dexter on DVD and was talking about it at work with one of the kids (I work at a juvenile detention center) and he mentioned that he had read and enjoyed the book. On his advice (and my love for the show), I picked it up. At first I thought it was going to be the first season exactly, but in written form, but as I continued reading I was pleasanty suprised. While some of the book mirrored the first season of the show, a lot of it was quite different. It was a strange read in the begining, with Lindsay's use of alliteration and metaphors, but I got used to it and the book read a lot like Dexter's own thoughts and narations in the show. I found Dexter's character well developed and easy to get into. It was well written, like you almost felt Dexter's emotions...if he had any. I would recomend this book to anyone who likes the tv series. I also purchaced the second and third books and can't wait to read them, even though I heard that Dexter in the Dark was terrible.
Book Review: DEXTER IS DELIRIOUSLY DELIGHTFUL! Summary: 5 Stars
Darkly Dreaming Dexter is the first in the Dexter series by Jeff Lindsay. The series is a firsthand account of America's first "likable" serial killer. Dexter only kills bad people...and his point of view is so original that it's impossible to not have a fun read.
The story focuses around the mysterious Ice Truck Killer who kills people by disassembling them piece-by-piece. At the same time he's engaged Dexter in a clever game of serial-killing one-ups-manship. Will Dexter save the day before someone close to him dies...by his own hand?
The Dexter character has also translated well to the Showtime series which is a great example of black comedy done to perfection. The novel and the series do share many similarities and some important differences (character deaths, unexplored plotlines). Thus you can read Dexter and watch Dexter and still get the maximum amount of entertainment value. This is a great character who hopefully will have a very long shelf life.
Book Review: Rooting For the Bad Guy Summary: 5 Stars
Dexter brings us a new and rather novel bad guy. On first glance it seems normal enough, another police detective book where Dexter works as a forensic invesitgator for the Miami Police.
Staright forward enough, with one minor wrinkle, He takes his work home with him as a hobby - he is also a serial killer. But a serial killer with a sense of morality, killing people who have otherwise escaped justice.
He is a brilliant sociopath, a mix of the Lone rnager meets the Marquis de Sade, and yet thorughout you find yourslef wanting him to figure how he will deal with his secret and keep it hidden, while working through the problems he faces tracking killers and trying to be as normal as possible.
It is different from the show (I have watched the first season of the show on DVD, and it is also good), and the differences makes it worthwhile to read even if you have seen the show.
Book Review: Darkly Dreaming Dexter review By: Ethan Summary: 5 Stars
Alright heres the deal. Darkly Dreaming Dexter follows a Blood spatter expert for the Miami Police department but during the night he is not your friendly co worker you see every day, he's a serial killer with a set of rules called "the code of harry". The book follows dexter to hunt a serial killer that is killing hookers. Darkly Dreaming Dexter is one of the books in this world that will scare you and also delight you at the same time. Dexter only kills bad people. If you have seen the show Dexter on showtime you are missing so much. The book has the same characters but a completely diffrent setting and the ending of season 1 in dexter and the end of Darkly Dreaming Dexter are so different. If you like crime fiction and horror stories THIS IS THE ONE TOO BUY! One of the best books I have ever read.
Book Review: A fast but engaging read Summary: 5 Stars
I discovered "Dexter" through word of mouth about the Showtime series based on the title character. I watched the whole first season (12 hours) in two days. I ordered the book shortly thereafter.
"Darkly Dreaming Dexter" is fairly short and a fast read, but it is well written and an interesting glimpse into the soul of a psychopath. A psychopath with a code, but a psychopath nonetheless.
Overall the TV show is better, in my opinion, due to the development of multiple story lines (the main plot diverges somewhat, as well) and periphery characters, but the book provides a far more detailed look at the inner workings of Dexter himself. Thus, the show is made even better after reading the book. Even if you don't watch the show, though, the book is a very worthwhile read.
