Book Review: Warning: This series is addictive!

Wrath is the only purebred vampire left, king of their race, and the leader of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, an elite group of warriors dedicated to protecting their race from the lessers who would kill them. When one of the brothers asks Wrath to protect his half-human daughter, the king is quick to decline. The woman is 25, nearing the time of transition, and the last thing Wrath needs is another encumbrance. But when the warrior is killed, Wrath thinks it only fitting that he protect the daughter out of a sense of honor and remembrance for his fallen brother.
Beth Randall has no idea the fate that is in store for her. Raised as an orphan, she works the beat at a newspaper, is friends with the local cops, and lives a simple--if lonely--life. That is until Wrath comes into her life--6'6" inches of stubborn male. Suddenly Beth finds that she's experiencing a passion that she's never felt before and Wrath is its source. As the two become involved it becomes more difficult for Beth to shrug off the life she's known in favor of the future Wrath promises. And when the lessers begin to close in on this King and his desired Queen, the brotherhood will have to fight together to protect their own.
Dark Lover can be described in one word: AWESOME. The last thing I need is another series to get hooked on, I've got plenty. But after spending all day reading this book I'm fighting the urge to run to the store and buy Lover Eternal. This series has it all, including a unique twist on vampire world building. For instance, in JR Ward's world, vampires can only be sustained through the blood of a vampire of the opposite sex (there goes those pesky rumors that they kill humans for fun). Also, the vampires in this series were created by a unique presence called the Scribe Virgin and the fact that they are hunted is the result of the Virgin's nemesis, the Omega. There's a lot to take in, but it's an interesting world and I can't wait to read more about it.
And then there are the heroes (because Wrath isn't the only alpha male in this bunch). As king, Wrath is a leader who puts the needs of his people before his own. His royalty has always been a burden to him, but since he found Beth he finds that he wants to be worth of her love, and if leading his people is what's necessary to do so, then so be it. Then there are his brothers, Rhage, Phury, Zsadist, Tohrment, and Vishous. All are equally capable. Equally deadly. Equally delightful! I'm usually a sucker for the romance in a new series, but in this one I'm in love with the whole cast, and while I loved Beth and Wrath, I'll I can't wait to see what happens next.
