Book Review: An Old Favorite

Now twenty-one years old, Cynthia Hart's Victoriana calendar continues as lush and lavish as when I first began receiving it as a teenager in the 1990's. No other modern artist interprets Victoriana in quite the same way Hart does; her collages, composed of authentic Victorian "scrap," have become almost iconic. Behind the 2010 edition's canary-yellow cover is a pig(!)-themed scene for January, with a pink-stripe background, New Year's greetings, and four-leaf clover. Pink blossoms, pink roses, and white lace comprise February's Valentine's Day collage, and March's has velvety purple pansies and Victorian children in spring clothing. Three of my favorite scenes are those for May (three girls in Harlequin costumes, surrounded by teal-blue bows and white narcissus); September (a Victorian schoolroom); and November (a brightly colored picture of children at a railway station; red and orange chrysanthemums). December has big red chrysanthemums next to a Victorian Santa Claus; more Santas and some pearl and green-jade brooches are seen on the bottom half of the calendar.
Last year's twentieth-anniversary calendar was a special edition and included scrapbooking materials. This year we again have the datebook (featuring scenes from past calendars) and holiday postcards Hart usually gives us.
